Plot

Novelist and part-time teacher Bill Borgens has been floundering since his wife Erica left him for a younger man two years ago. Instead of working on a new book, he spies on Erica and her new husband, Martin, while pretending to be a jog. Bill's son, Rusty, is a high school student who falls in love with a classmate named Kate but does not have the courage to talk to him. Bill's daughter, Sam, is a cynical student who would rather stand up one night and hang out with people she knows are less intelligent than herself, to protect her from love.

On Thanksgiving, Bill has Rusty reluctant to set up a place for Erica. At dinner, Sam announces that his first novel has been accepted for publication. Bill, after raising his children as a writer from birth, was excited, but became annoyed when he admitted that the book was not the book he had helped write. Rusty goes to have Thanksgiving with Erica and Martin, but Sam refuses, citing Erica's betrayal of Bill's feelings.

While at a bar, Sam's classmate, Lou tried to stop him from starting another relationship. Despite being rejected, he kept chasing her and finally threw it into a cup of coffee. While discussing their favorite books, Sam is fascinated with their same tastes in literature and running, refusing to be restricted. When Lou stopped coming to the writing seminar they attended, Sam traced him to the house where he took care of his dying mother. Sam is humbled by this and agrees to go with Lou. When they discuss Sam's novel he reveals that the scene where the main character sees his mother having sex with a man on the beach is about Erica and Martin. When Martin worried that if Bill could see them, Erica replied, "I do not care." While listening to Lou's favorite song, Sam starts to cry, afraid of being hurt. Lou tells her that he will not hurt her, and they share a kiss.

Rusty reads poetry in the class about the angels. Bill reads Rusty's journal, which he paid for Sam and Rusty for years. When Rusty catches him, Bill says that Rusty needs to really experience life to become a better writer. Rusty and his friend, Jason, bribed them to a party held by Kate's girlfriend, Glen. Rusty accidentally sees Kate and Glen doing cocaine in the bathroom, leaving him unenthusiastic. He and Jason will go when they watch Kate and Glen argue; when Glen pushes Kate to the ground, Rusty punches his face and runs away with Kate and Jason. Since Kate can not come home bruised and tall, Rusty takes her to her home. As he tucked him into bed, he asked Rusty if his angelic poem was about him; he admitted it. They share a kiss and start a relationship. Rusty gives Kate a copy of It , his favorite novel, and he gives him his favorite album. On Christmas Day they have sex in her closet, which she believes none of them will forget (like the first time Rusty). At the same time Kate struggled with her drug addiction; while visiting Erica's home, she rummaged through the medicine cabinet and was on the verge of theft of prescription drugs when Erica approached her.

Bill has regular sexual relations with his married neighbor, Tricia (Kristen Bell), with whom he occasionally jogs. However, he continues to mourn his failed marriage. While shopping Christmas she met Erica and they chatted over coffee. She tells him that, if given a second chance, she will be a much better husband, making Erica look uncomfortable. Tricia urges her to move on and start dating again, help her dress better and create an online dating profile. After a successful date, he stopped in front of Erica's house and peered at the window. Seeing him read the book, he left his wedding ring as a sign that he had moved. However, he took the double and realized that he was reading one of his own books. Shining, he took back the ring.

Sam throws a party for the launch of his book, where Bill speaks about the writing process, quoting What We Speak About When We Speak About Love, his favorite book. Erica is invited by Lou, but is clearly uncomfortable and avoids the conversation. Bill encouraged him to talk to Sam, who pretended not to know him when signing a copy of Erica's novel. When Sam gives Kate champagne - unaware of Kate's addiction and the fact that she's a minor - Kate goes back for more and finally goes home with Gus, one of Bill's students. The Borgens tracked him down; Bill and Erica burst into Gus's apartment and found him asleep in his bedroom after a night of drinking and using drugs. When Kate was put in the car, Rusty lifted the blanket covering her body and realized that she had sex with Gus, which made her cry.

Heartbroken, Rusty turns into alcohol and goes home drunk almost every night. While in a department store with Jason, he meets Glen, who chases and beat him. Kate writes Rusty's letter apologizing and telling him that she's in rehab, after realizing the only person who can actually fix it is herself. She hopes someday she can be worthy of someone like her. Bill, worried about Rusty, told him to channel his pain into his writing. Rusty asks if he's doing the same thing when Erica leaves, pushing Bill to burn him. Rusty wrote a story titled "I've Just Seen A Face" (after the Beatles song of the same name, which he told Sam that he heard when thinking about Kate) and found it as therapy. Later, he got a call from Stephen King, his favorite author, who told him that Sam sent his story to King, who published it in Fantasy Magazine and Sci-Fi Fiction.

Bill reveals to Sam that he came out with Erica when Sam was a baby, and when she returned six months later, she accepted it, after waiting all the time. He promises that if he leaves her, he'll give her a second chance. When Lou's mother died, Sam realized how much her mother meant to her and they went to great lengths to reconcile. A year later, Bill suggests he moved from Erica by not arranging a place for her at the table for Thanksgiving. When the family sat down to eat, joined Lou, Erica arrived and cried asking if there was room for her. He joins them at the table and Rusty announces his story is being published. While the family celebrates, Bill again quotes from What We Speak About When We Talk About Love : I can hear my heartbeat I can hear the hearts of everyone I can hear the voice the humans we sit there make, not one of us move, even when the room gets dark. "
