Initial years

PelÃÆ'  © was born on October 23, 1940, in TrÃÆ'ªs CoraÃÆ'§ÃÆ'Âμes, Minas Gerais, Brazil, son of football player Fluminense Dondinho (born JoÃÆ' £ o Ramos do Nascimento) and Celeste Arantes. He is the elder of two siblings. He was named after the American inventor Thomas Edison. His parents decided to remove "i" and called him "Edson", but there was a mistake on the birth certificate, leading many documents to show his name as "Edison" instead of "Edson", as he was called. He was originally nicknamed "Dico" by his family. He received the nickname "PelÃÆ' ©" during his school days, when it was claimed he was given because of his pronunciation of his favorite player's name, local Vasco da Gama goalkeeper BilÃÆ' ©, which he mispronounced but the more he complained the more it stalled. In his autobiography, Pelà ©  © states that he does not know what the name means, nor does his old friends. Regardless of the claim that the name came from Bilene, and that it is Hebrew for "miracle" (???????), it has no known meaning in Portuguese.

PelÃÆ' Â © grew up in poverty in Bauru in the state of Sao Paulo. She earned extra money by working in a tea shop as a waiter. Taught to play by his father, he can not buy decent football and usually plays with socks stuffed with newspapers and tied with rope or grapefruit. He played for several amateur teams in his youth, including Sete de Setembro, Canto do Rio, Paulinho and , AmÃÆ' Â © riquinha . Pela © leads the junior Bauru Athletic Club (trained by Waldemar de Brito) for two state youth championships of SÃÆ' â € <â € < In his mid-teens, he plays for an indoor soccer team called Radium. Indoor football had just become popular in Bauru when PelÃÆ'Â © started playing it. He is part of the first indoor soccer futebol de SalÃÆ'Â o (indoor soccer) competition in the region. PelÃÆ'Ã… © and his team won the first championship and several others.

According to PelÃÆ'Â ©, indoor football presents a difficult challenge; He says it's a lot faster than football on the pitch and that the players are required to think faster because everyone is close to each other on the pitch. PelÃÆ' Â © aks indoor soccer to help her think better in place. In addition, indoor football allowed him to play with an adult when he was about 14 years old. In one of the tournaments he attended, he was initially considered too young to play, but ended up being the top scorer with fourteen or fifteen goals. "It gives me a lot of confidence," Pela said, "I know that I'm not afraid of anything to come".

Club career

Santos

In 1956, de Brito took PelÃÆ'  © to Santos, an industrial and port city located near Sao Paulo, to try professional Santos FC clubs, informing directors in Santos that the 15-year-old would be "the greatest football". players in the world. "Pelà © © © impressed coach Santos Lula during the trial at EstÃÆ'¡dio Vila Belmiro, and he signed a professional contract with the club in June 1956. Pela © strongly promoted in local media as a future superstar. He made his senior team debut at 7 September 1956 at the age of 15 against Corinthians Santo Andre and had a memorable performance in a 7-1 victory, scoring the first goal of his productive career during the match.

When the 1957 season started, Pela © was given the starting place in the first team and, at the age of 16, became the league's top scorer. Ten months after the professional signing, the teenager was summoned to the Brazilian national team. After the 1962 World Cup, wealthy European clubs like Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United attempted to sign him, but the Brazilian government under President Juventus Quadros has declared Pela an "official national treasure" a year earlier to prevent it. transferred from abroad.

PelÃÆ'Â © won his first major title with Santos in 1958 when the team won Campeonato Paulista; PelÃÆ'Â © will finish the tournament as the top scorer with 58 goals, a record that stands today. A year later, he will help the team achieve their first win at Torneio Rio-SÃÆ'Â o Paulo in a 3-0 win over Vasco da Gama. However, Santos can not defend the Paulista title. In 1960, PelÃÆ' Â © scored 33 goals to help his team reclaim the Campista Paulista trophy but lost at the Rio-SÃÆ'Â o o Paulo tournament after finishing in 8th place. In the 1960 season, PelÃÆ' Â © scored 47 goals and helped Santos regain Campeonato Paulista. The club went on to win the Brazilian TaÃÆ'§a in the same year, defeating Bahia in the final; PelÃÆ'Â © finished as the tournament's top scorer with 9 goals. The victory allowed Santos to participate in the Copa Libertadores, the most prestigious club tournament in the Western Hemisphere.

Santos's most successful Copa Libertadores season began in 1962; the team are seeded in Group One alongside Cerro PorteÃÆ' Â ± o and Deportivo Municipal Bolivia, winning every game of their group but one (1-1 away game against Cerro). Santos beat Universidad CatÃÆ'³lica in the semi-finals and met defending champions PeÃÆ' Â ± arol in the final round. PelÃÆ' Â © scored twice in a playoff game to secure a first title for the Brazilian club. PelÃÆ'Â © finished as the second top scorer of the competition with four goals. In the same year, Santos will successfully defend Campeonato Brasileiro (with 37 goals from Pela Ã… ©) and Brazilian TaÃÆ'§a (PelÃÆ' Â © scored four goals in the last series against Botafogo). Santos will also win the 1962 Intercontinental Cup against Benfica. Wearing his number 10 shirt, PelÃÆ'Â © produced one of the best performances of his career, scoring a hat-trick in Lisbon when Santos won 5-2. As defending champion, Santos qualified automatically into the semi-finals stage of the 1963 Copa Libertadores. The ballet blanco, the nickname given to Santos for PelÃÆ'Â ©, successfully defended the title after victories over Botafogo and Boca Juniors. Pela © helped Santos overcome Botafogo's team containing Brazilian legends like Garrincha and Jairzinho with a last-minute goal in the first leg of the semi-finals that made it 1-1. In the second leg, PelÃÆ'Â © prints a hat-trick in EstÃÆ'¡dio do MaracanÃÆ'Â £ when Santos won, 0-4, in the second leg. Santos started the final series with a 3-2 win in the first leg and defeated Boca Juniors 1-2, at La Bombonera. That is a rare achievement in the official competition, with another goal of Pela © ©. Santos became the first (and still only) Brazilian team to lift the Copa Libertadores on Argentine soil. PelÃÆ'Â © finish the tournament with 5 goals. Santos lost Campeonato Paulista after finishing in third place but then won the Rio-SÃÆ'Â o Paulo tournament after a 0-3 win over Flamengo in the final, with PelÃÆ'Â © scoring one goal. Pela © will also help Santos retain the Intercontinental Cup and Brazil's TaÃÆ'§a against Milan and Bahia respectively.

In 1964 Copa Libertadores, Santos was beaten on both legs of the semi-finals by Independiente. The club won Campeonato Paulista, with PelÃÆ'  © netting 34 goals. Santos also shared the Rio-SÃÆ'  £ o Paulo title with Botafogo and won the Brazilian TaÃÆ'§a for the fourth year in a row. In 1965 Copa Libertadores, Santos reached the semi-finals and met PeÃÆ'  ± arol in a rematch of the 1962 final. After two matches, a playoff is needed to break the tie. Unlike 1962, PeÃÆ'  ± arol came out as the winner and got rid of Santos 2-1. However, Pela © will end up as top scorer of the tournament with eight goals. This proved to be an early setback because Santos failed to defend Torneio Rio-SÃÆ' £ Paulo. In 1966, PelÃÆ' © and Santos also failed to defend Brazil's TaÃÆ'§a because Pelà © a goal was not enough to prevent a 9-4 defeat of Cruzeiro (led by TostÃÆ' £ o) in the last series. The club, however, won Campeonato Paulista in 1967, 1968 and 1969. On 19 November 1969, PelÃÆ'  © scored his 1000th goal in all competitions, in a highly anticipated moment in Brazil. The goal, popularly dubbed O MilÃÆ'Ã… © simo (Thousand), occurred in a match against Vasco da Gama, when PelÃÆ' © n scored from a penalty kick, at the Maracan Stadium.

PelÃÆ'  © claimed that his most memorable goal was to score in Rua Javari's stadium in Campeonato Paulista's game against rivals Sà £ o Paulo, Clube Atlà © cheico Juventus on August 2, 1959. Since there was no footage of this match video, Pela © asked that computer animation is made from this specific purpose. In March 1961, PelÃÆ'  © scored a goal de placa (a goal like a plaque), against Fluminense in MaracanÃÆ' £. PelÃÆ'  © received the ball on the edge of the penalty area himself, and ran the length of the field, dodging opposition players with a trick, before hitting the ball outside the goalkeeper. A plaque is commissioned with dedication to "the most beautiful destination in Maracan's history".

In 1967, two factions involved in the Nigerian Civil War agreed with a 48-hour truce so they could watch Pela playing an exhibition match in Lagos. During his time at Santos, PelÃÆ'Â © played with many talented players, including Zito, Pepe, and Coutinho; the latter partnering with him in many one-two plays, attacks, and goals.

New York Cosmos

After the 1974 season (the 19th alongside Santos), PelÃÆ'  © resigned from the Brazilian football club although he continues to occasionally play for Santos in competitive competitive matches. Two years later, he came out of semi-retirement to sign with the New York Cosmos of the North American Football League (NASL) for the 1975 season. Despite passing his prime at this point, Pelà © is credited with a significantly increased public awareness and sports interest in United States of America. Hoping to pump the same consciousness in the Dominican Republic, he and the Cosmos team played in an exhibition match against Haiti's Violette AC team at the Santo Domingo Olympic Stadium on June 3, 1976, in which over 25,000 fans watched him score goals in seconds last match, leading the Cosmos to a 2-1 victory. He led Cosmos to the 1977 NASL championship, in his third and final season with the club.

On October 1, 1977, PelÃÆ'Â © closed his career in an exhibition match between Cosmos and Santos. Santos arrived in New York after defeating Seattle Sounders in New Jersey, 2-0. The match was played in front of a sold-out crowd at Giants Stadium and aired in the United States on ABC World of Sports and around the world. Pela's father and wife both attended the match, as well as Muhammad Ali and Bobby Moore.

International career

Pela's first international match was a 2-1 defeat against Argentina on 7 July 1957 in MaracanÃÆ'Â £. In that match, he scored his first goal for Brazil 16 years old and nine months to become the youngest player to score in international football.

World Cup 1958

Pela arrived in Sweden with a knee injury, but on her return from the treatment room, her colleagues stood together and forced her choice. His first match was against the Soviet Union in the third round match of the 1958 FIFA World Cup, where he provided assists for VavÃÆ'¡'s second goal. He is the youngest player of the tournament, and at the time of the youngest ever to play in the World Cup. Against France in the semi-finals, Brazil led 2-1 in the first half, and then PelÃÆ'Â © prints a hat-trick, becoming the youngest in World Cup history to do so.

On 29 June 1958, PelÃÆ'  © became the youngest player to play in World Cup finals in 17 years and 249 days. He scored two goals in the final as Brazil beat Sweden 5-2 in Stockholm, the capital. His first goal in which he flicked the ball past a defender before firing a shot into the corner of the net was chosen as one of the best goals in World Cup history. After Pela's second goal, Swedish player Sigvard Parling will comment later; "When PelÃÆ' © n scored the fifth goal in the Final, I have to be honest and say I feel like clapping." When the game ended, Pelà © came out on the pitch, and revived by Garrincha. He then recovered, and was forced by a victory to cry when he was congratulated by his teammate. He finished the tournament with six goals in four matches played, tied for second place, behind Just Fontaine's record breaker, and was named the best young player of the tournament.

It was at the 1958 World Cup that PelÃÆ'Â © started wearing the jersey with number 10. The show was the result of disorganization: the leaders of the Brazilian Federation did not send the shirt number of players and it was up to FIFA to choose the number 10 shirts for Pela © who became a substitute on that occasion. The press proclaimed Pela © the greatest revelation of the 1958 World Cup, and he was also retroactively given the Silver Ball as the second best player of the tournament, behind Didi.

South America Championship

PelÃÆ' Â © also played in the South American Championships. In the 1959 competition he was named best player of the tournament and was the top scorer with 8 goals, while Brazil were second despite unbeaten in the tournament.

1962 World Cup

When the 1962 World Cup started, PelÃÆ'Â © was the best player judged in the world at the time. In the first match of the 1962 World Cup in Chile, against Mexico, PelÃÆ'Â © helped the first goal and then scored the second goal, after running past four defenders, to go 2-0 up. He injured himself in the next game while trying long-range shots against Czechoslovakia. It will keep him out of the rest of the tournament, and force coach AymorÃÆ' Â © Moreira to make the lineup only changes from the tournament. His replacement is Amarildo, who is looking good for the rest of the tournament. However, it was Garrincha who would take the lead role and take Brazil to their second World Cup title, having beaten Czechoslovakia in the final in Santiago.

1966 World Cup

PelÃÆ'Â © is the most famous footballer in the world during the 1966 World Cup in England, and Brazil downgraded several world champions like Garrincha, Gilmar and Djalma Santos with the addition of other stars like Jairzinho, TostÃÆ'ÂÂ o and GÃÆ' Â © rson, leading to expectations which is high for them. Brazil were eliminated in the first round, playing only three matches. The World Cup was marked, inter alia, due to a foul on Pela © which made him injured by Bulgarian and Portuguese defenders.

PelÃÆ'  © scored the first goal of a free kick against Bulgaria, becoming the first player to score in three consecutive FIFA World Cups, but due to injury, a result of continuous fouling by the Bulgarian players, he missed the second game against Hungary. Brazil lost the game and PelÃÆ' ©, though still recovering, was brought back for the last important game against Portugal at Goodison Park in Liverpool by Brazilian coach Vicente Feola. Feola changed the entire defense, including the goalkeeper, while in midfield he returned to the first match formation. During the match, Portuguese defender JoÃÆ' o Morais moored Pelà ©, but was not sent by referee George McCabe. Pela  © should stay on the field limp for the rest of the game, because replacements are not allowed at that time. After this match he vowed he would never play again in the World Cup, a decision he later changed.

World Cup 1970

PelÃÆ'Â © was called up to the national team in early 1969, he refused at first, but later received and played in six World Cup qualifying matches, scoring six goals. The 1970 World Cup in Mexico is expected to be PelÃÆ'Â © lat. The Brazil squad for this tournament featured major changes in relation to the 1966 squad. Players like Garrincha, Nilton Santos, Valdir Pereira, Djalma Santos and Gilmar have retired. However, the Brazilian World Cup squad of 1970, which included players such as PelÃÆ'Â ©, Rivelino, Jairzinho, GÃÆ' Â © rson, Carlos Alberto Torres, TostÃÆ'Â Â Â and Clodoaldo, are often regarded as the greatest football team in history.

Five forward Jairzinho, PelÃÆ' © ©, Gerson, TostÃÆ' £ o and Rivelino together created an attacking momentum, with PelÃÆ' © having a central role in the Brazilian way into the final. All the Brazilian matches in the tournament (except the final) were played in Guadalajara, and in the first game against Czechoslovakia, PelÃÆ' © © gave Brazil a 2-1 advantage, controlling Gerson's long pass with his chest and then scoring. In this game Pela à © tried to throw Ivo Viktor's goalkeeper off the halfway line, narrowly missing out on Czechoslovakia's goal. Brazil went on to win the match, 4-1. In the first half of the game against England, PelÃÆ' © almost scored with a header saved by England goalkeeper Gordon Banks. In the second half, he controlled a cross from TostÃÆ' ° o before flicking the ball into Jairzinho who scored the only goal.

Against Romania, PelÃÆ'Ã… © scored twice, with Brazil winning with a final score of 3-2. In the quarter-final against Peru, Brazil won 4-2, with PelÃÆ' Â © helping TostÃÆ'Â £ o for Brazil's third goal. In their semi-final match, Brazil faces Uruguay for the first time since the 1950 World Cup final. Jairzinho puts Brazil ahead 2-1, and PelÃÆ' © © helped Rivelino to 3-1. During the game, PelÃÆ'Â © made one of his most famous plays. TostÃÆ'Â £ o pass the ball to PelÃÆ' Â © to collect Uruguay goalkeeper, Ladislao Mazurkiewicz pay attention and run out of his line to get the ball before Pela. However, Pela was there first and trick Mazurkiewicz with a trick by not touching the ball, causing it to roll over to the left goalkeeper, while Pela went to the right keeper. PelÃÆ'Â © ran around the goalkeeper to pick up the ball and take a shot while turning toward the goal, but he turned excessively as he fired, and the ball floated just wide of the far post.

Brazil plays Italy in the final at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. PelÃÆ'Â Â © scored the opening goal with a header over Italian defender Tarcisio Burgnich. He then made assists on Brazil's third goal, scored by Jairzinho, and the fourth was completed by Carlos Alberto. The final goal of the game is often regarded as the greatest team goal of all time as it involves all but two players out of the team. The drama peaked after PelÃÆ'Â © did a blind pass leading to Carlos Alberto's run. He ran from behind and hit the ball to score. Brazil won the match 4-1, retained the Jules Rimet Trophy indefinitely, and PelÃÆ' Â © received the Golden Ball as a tournament player. Burgnich, who marked PelÃÆ'Â © during the final, was quoted as saying "I said to myself before the game, he was made of skin and bone just like everyone else - but I was wrong".

Pela's last international match was on July 18, 1971 against Yugoslavia in Rio de Janeiro. With PelÃÆ'Â © in the field, Brazil's team record is 67 wins, 14 draws and 11 defeats. Brazil has never lost a match when it lowers Pela and Garrincha.

In December 2000, PelÃÆ'Ã… © and Maradona shared the FIFA Player of the Century award by FIFA. The award was originally intended to be based on a vote in a web poll, but after it became clear that it was favored by Diego Maradona, many observers complained that the nature of the Internet from the poll would mean a slanting demographic of young fans who would see Maradona play but not PelÃÆ' ©. FIFA then appointed the FIFA member's "Family of Football" committee to decide on the award winner along with the voices of FIFA Magazine readers. The committee selects PelÃÆ' ©. Because Maradona won a poll on the Internet, however, it was decided he and Pela  © should share the award.
