The poem is a rhyming narrative from the point of view of a British soldier in India, about an Indian water carrier (a bhishti) who saved the life of the soldiers but was soon shot and killed. In the last three lines, the soldier regretted the abuse he committed to Din and admitted that Din was the better of the two. The poem was published as one of a collection of martial poems called the Barrack-Room Ballads .

In contrast to Kipling's later poem, "The White Man's Burden", "Gunga Din" ( ) is named after the Indians, describes her as a heroic character who is not afraid of dangers on the battlefield as she tends to be male- the injured man. The British soldiers who ordered Din around and beat him for not bringing them water fast enough presented as heartless and shallow, and ultimately lower than him.

Although "Din" is often pronounced to rhyme with "pins", rhymes in poetry make it clear that it should be pronounced to rhyme with "green".

T. S. Eliot incorporated the poem in his 1941 collection. A Choice of Kipling's Verse .

Adaptations

The poem inspired a 1939 adventure movie of the same name from RKO Pictures starring Sam Jaffe in the title role, along with Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Joan Fontaine.

The film was remade in 1961 as a Sergeant 3 , starring the Rat Pack. The location was transferred from British colonial India to the old West. The character of Gunga Din is played in this film by Sammy Davis Jr.. Many elements of the 1939 film are also incorporated into Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

In 1958, Bobby Darin wrote and recorded the song "That's The Way of Love Is" where, referring to the unsolved puzzle of love, he sings "And if you get the answer, you are a better man, sir, than I am... Gunga Din ".

The animated version featuring Jim Backus was made in 1964, as part of The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo . This is the third episode of this series.

British singer Peter Bellamy enters the poetry setting on his notes about Barrack Room Ballads .

In 1966, songwriter Jim Croce arranged the words into music and released them on his album Facets .

In 2015, The Libertines, a British rock band, composed the single "Gunga Din" for their comeback album Anthems for Doomed Youth.
