April 7, 2006 Tornado

The college was heavily damaged by the tornado outbreak on 7 April 2006. Two buildings suffered direct attacks from the whirlwind, and over 90 cars in the parking lot were damaged and destroyed. There were only minor injuries on campus. Administration Building Hal Reed Ramer received major damage, including damage to the President's office. Noble Caudill Hall suffered the most damage, because the second floor on the south side of the building collapsed, and most of the roof above WVCP radio and Wemyss Auditorium were torn and/or collapsed inside. Caudill Hall was closed for over a year and a half until repair was completed. Overall, eleven classrooms had to be relocated due to damage and 72 faculty and staff offices were moved. The coordinator of the construction of state volunteers and campus security staff has been credited with helping save lives on the day of the tornado struck. They are honored in the ceremony at school.

In the spring of 2007, Ramer's buildings were again fully loaded, including new homes for student radio stations. The Caudill Building reopened for class on January 12, 2008. A major landscaping project completed in spring 2008 marks the end of a tornado repair.
