Stanley Armor Dunham (March 23, 1918 - February 8, 1992) was the 44th grandfather of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. He and his wife Madelyn Payne Dunham appointed Obama from the age of 10 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Early life and education
Dunham was born in Wichita, Kansas, which is younger than two sons to Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham, Sr. (December 25, 1894, Sumner County, Kansas - October 4, 1970, Wichita, Kansas) and Ruth Lucille Armor (September 1, 1900). , Illinois - November 25, 1926, Wichita, Kansas). His father's ancestors settled in Kempton, Indiana, in the 1840s, before moving to Kansas. Her parents married on October 3, 1915, at a house on South Saint Francis St. in Wichita, and opened The William Street's 'Travelers' Cafe on William between the old firehouse and the old Wichita Town Hall.
On November 25, 1926, at the age of 8, Dunham found his mother's body after he committed suicide. Furthermore, Dunham's father placed him and his older brother, Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham, Jr. in the care of their maternal grandparents in El Dorado, Kansas. A rebel teenager, Stanley Dunham allegedly hit his high school principal and spent some time floating, jumping over rail cars to Chicago, California, and back again. Dunham married Madelyn Lee Payne on May 5, 1940, her senior prom night.

World War II
Dunham was listed as a person in the US Army on January 18, 1942, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and served at the European Theater of World War II with the Ordnance Supply and Maintenance Company of 1830, Aviation. During D-Day, this unit helps support the 9th Air Force. Dunham and his brother were deployed to France six weeks after D-Day. Before the Invasion of Normandy, the brothers once met accidentally when Stanley Dunham went looking for a ration at a London hotel, where his brother Ralph Dunham happened to stay overnight. Madelyn Dunham gave birth to their daughter, Stanley Ann Dunham, later known as Ann, at St. Hospital. Francis in Wichita on November 29, 1942. During the war, Madelyn Dunham worked on the Boeing B-29 assembly line in Wichita.
Post World War II
After two years of military service in Europe (1943-1945), Dunham was fired from the US Army on August 30, 1945. After the war, the family moved to Berkeley, California and then eventually returned to El Dorado, Kansas, where Dunham manages a furniture store. In 1955, after Dunhams moved to Seattle, Washington, Dunham worked as a salesman for Standard-Grunbaum Furniture Company, and his daughter Ann attended high school. The family lives in an apartment at Wedgewood Estates in the neighborhood of Wedgwood, Seattle. In 1956 they moved to Shorewood Apartments on Mercer Island, a suburb of Seattle. Ann attended high school there, and they lived until she graduated in 1960. In 1957, Dunham began working for Doces Majestic Furniture Company.
Hawaii
The family then moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where Dunham found a better furniture store opportunity. Madelyn Dunham began working at the Bank of Hawaii in 1960, and was promoted as one of the first female vice presidents in 1970.
In one of my earliest memories is sitting on my grandfather's shoulders when an astronaut from one of the Apollo missions arrived at Hickam Air Force Base after a splashdown success ". At the age of 10, Barack Obama moved with the Dunhams in Honolulu to study in the US while his mother and stepfather Lolo Soetoro lived in Jakarta, Indonesia. His mother then returned to Hawaii to continue his graduate studies, but when he returned to Indonesia in 1977 for his master's field work, Obama lived in the United States with his grandparents. Obama wrote in his memoir, Dreams From My Father, "I came to an unspoken agreement with my grandparents: I can stay with them and they will leave me alone as long as I keep my troubles out of sight".
Death
Dunham died in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 8, 1992 and was buried at Punchbowl National Cemetery.
Ancestor
Dunham's legacy consists of Britain and Ireland and other European ancestors who settled in American colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries. Dunham is a direct descendant of Jonathan Singletary Dunham, a leading early American settler who left the Plymouth Colony to build the first gristmill in New Jersey.
The most recent European ancestor is Falmouth Kearney, a peasant who emigrated from Moneygall, County Offaly, Ireland, during the Greater Irish Famine and settled in Jefferson City, Tipton County, Indiana, USA. Kearney's youngest daughter, Mary Ann (Kearney) Dunham, is the grandmother of Stanley Dunham's father.
Stanley Dunham's distant cousin includes six US presidents: James Madison, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush. Through this same ancestor, Mareen Duvall, a wealthy Huguenot merchant who emigrated to Maryland in the 1650s, Dunham was linked to former Vice President Dick Cheney (the eighth cousin ever to be removed). Through another common ancestor, Hans Gutknecht, a Swiss German from Bischwiller, Alsace whose three sons settled in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and the Kentucky border in the mid-18th century, Dunham was President Harry S. Truman's fourth cousin, twice removed. Dunham and Wild Bill Hickock were the sixth cousins, four times removed, through Jacob Dunham.
