Webbing is a technique for making woven products of one of various materials such as sugar cane, generic name for the material used in the manufacture, and the terms for the goods produced. The word rattan is believed to be from Scandinavia: vika which means bowing in Sweden, and vikker means willow. Rattan is traditionally made from plant origin, such as rattan, willow, reed, and bamboo, but synthetic fibers are now also used. Lightweight but sturdy wicker, making it suitable for items to be moved frequently such as porch and patio furniture. Rushwork and wickerwork is a term used in the UK.

Histori

Wicker has been documented as far back as the ancient Egyptians, made of genuine "grass grass and swamp". Middle-class families can only buy a few pieces, like a small table. However, archaeologists working in the tombs of wealthy pharaohs have found a variety of wicker items, including "chests, baskets, wig boxes, and chairs." Woven is even found used in the Achaemenid Empire on the battlefield, on the shield.

The popularity of rattan passed from ancient Egypt and Persia to ancient Rome. A woven basket is used to carry things in Pompeii. Furniture made from rattan in Roman style. It has been suggested that extensive use of rattan in the Iron Age (1200 BC - 400 AD in Europe) may have influenced the development of the woven pattern used in Celtic art. In the 16th and 17th centuries, rattan was "fairly common" in European countries such as Portugal, Spain, and England.

Wicker received encouragement during the Exploration Era, when international sea traders returned from Southeast Asia with a species of palm called rattan. Rattan is stronger than traditional European rattan materials, although the rattan rods can be separated so that softer deeper cores can be used for webbing.

The 19th century brought great popularity to rattan in Europe, England, and North America. It is used outdoors or indoors. People in the Victorian Era believe it's cleaner than upholstered furniture. It's cheap, withstand harsh weather and can adapt to many styles.

In the United States, Cyrus Wakefield began building rattan furniture in the 1850s. He first used rattan that had been taken off the ship, where he was used as a weight, but when his design became famous, he began importing the material himself. The Wakefield Company became one of the leading industries in rattan furniture; then joined the Heywood Chair Manufacturing Company (a wooden chair company that has created a mechanical process for weaving wicker chairs) to form Heywood-Wakefield from Gardner, Massachusetts, one of the oldest and most prominent North American wicker manufacturers.

Lately, his aesthetics are heavily influenced by the Art and Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th century.

Woven is still a popular material. Antique wicker products are highly sought after by collectors. Reproduction furniture and accent pieces are also sold for indoor and outdoor use. (In North America today, "rattan" and "rattan" are often used interchangeably.) Wickerwork is an important industry in Poland, employing hundreds of skilled workers to create goods for export to Western Europe.

Natural rattan is renowned for its strength and durability, as well as the level of beauty and high comfort that can be created by an expert. The material used can be any part of the plant, such as a cane or rattan core, or entire plant thickness, such as a willow switch. Other popular materials include reeds and bamboo. Natural weaving requires care to stay in good condition.

Woven can also be made from synthetic materials, or combinations. In furniture, such as benches, chairs, benches and other seating devices, the frame is usually made of a more rigid material, after which a more flexible material is woven into the frame to fill it. In smaller sections such as baskets, a reinforcement frame is not required so that all parts are woven from plaiting material.

The synthetic types include high tensile wire wrapped in paper (using a patented Lloyd Loom process at the beginning of the 20th century), and plastic or resin. Synthetic woven is often preferred for outdoor use ("all-weather wicker"). Frame materials used in this newer version include aluminum.
