Volleyball in the United States is popular with male and female participants of all ages. Almost all high schools and colleges in the United States have women's volleyball teams, and most areas of the country have development programs for girls of all ages as well. While many areas of the country form male teams and development programs, there is still less chance for young male athletes to play volleyball in the United States than for young women.

Professional volley

As a professional sport, volleyball has limited success in the United States. A lot of effort has been made to start professional indoor women's volleyball leagues. In 1987, the effort went bankrupt due to the lack of interest of fans and hence the interest of advertisers. Major League Volleyball is a women's league with six teams who played for two and a half seasons from 1987 to 1989 with games featured on ESPN on tape delays; it was folded mid-season in 1989, however, due to financial losses. Two-man and two professional beach volleyball leagues have done better, especially the Volleyball Professional Association (AVP), but no one gets a lot of followers that will get them consistent coverage by major television networks. In 2002, the Professional Volleyball League of the United States began as an indoor professional women's league, but lasted only one season. In 2004 and again in 2005, NBC aired the Nissan Championship series, with Fox Sports taking the majority of the season.

Premier League Premier

A new indoor professional league, Premier League Volleyball (approved by USA Volleyball), begins in 2012. The league was launched by Steve Bishop, PVL Asst. Commissioner, Florida. Tom Pingel (Volley USA) serves as League Commissioner. In 2013 PVL joined and launched the men's division.

College college volleyball

Volleyball is a popular NCAA sport, mostly for women. In the school year 2013-14, 1064 NCAA member schools, 329 of them in the top-tier Division I, sponsored women's volleyball at the university level, with 16,647 participants in all three divisions. At the same time, 109 schools across all three NCAA divisions combined university-sponsored male-sponsored volleyball, with only 23 of them in Division I; the number of male varsity volleyball players is about one-tenth of women's participation (1,720 to 16,647).

In 2012, the NCAA approved a college beach volleyball team for women for the first time; 14 schools sponsor this sport, with a little over 200 participants. Also in 2012, the NCAA formed the men's Division III championship for the first time. The NCAA held its first beach volleyball championship in 2016, at which time nearly 50 schools sponsored the sport.

High School Volume

High school volleyball is a falling sport for girls and spring sports for boys (except in some states). Schools usually have university teams and junior university teams, and some schools also have new student teams. Teams play in pre-season and season competitions, generally followed by post-season that includes regional championships or sections and often state championships.

While each country organizes its own school volleyball competition through their state athletic association, most follow the leadership of the National Federation of State Schools Association (NFHS) for sport governance. Most volleyball regulations from state to state are basically the same in the United States. However, due to individual associations, some minor changes and variations can occur. For example, the Ohio High School Athletics Association (OHSAA) allows the competition to be the best of the five while the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) or West Virginia High School Activity Commission (WVSSAC) only allows the competition to be the best. three. Today, however, most state associations now use the same guidelines and also use the rally assessment, the best five competition format, and allow libero to serve. In addition, most countries, if not all, have adopted plain white polo shirts for officials as opposed to black and white striped shirts worn in the past.

Junior voices

Junior volleyball is played in the US in many organizations such as churches, YMCA and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), but the largest sponsorship organization is USA Volleyball, which oversees what is commonly referred to as "volleyball club" and hosts Junior Olympic Championships every year.

In volleyball clubs, junior players develop their skills and knowledge of the game, usually with the goal of playing for a high school team. Elite players also prepare for college volleyball. The club season usually takes place from late November to July, with the annual Junior Olympic Championships (JOs) taking place in late June, early July. Teams usually play tournaments throughout the season, build their ratings in various areas and prepare to follow JO or season-ending tournaments such as the Volleyball Festival, which claims to be the world's largest annual sporting event.

To be eligible to join, teams must compete in JO Qualification, also known as National Qualification. There are nine qualifying tournaments across the country, where teams travel to get invitations to JO. The top teams attend this tournament to get their offer, and the college coach will be there to see this year's players.

The club season, long considered an additional place for girls and boys to gain experience in preparation for their upcoming high school season, is now almost a necessity to stay competitive in local high schools. This is also very important in the process of college recruitment, as most of the college season coincides with the state high school season, causing the college coach to miss the entire season. This time is made during club season when college coaches can travel to various tournaments and meet with club coaches, watch club players, and recruit for their teams.

Today

Volleyball is one of the most popular girls sports, and a strong school and club program is found all over the country. According to a 2017 survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations, volleyball is the second highest sport for women's participation at the secondary school level behind the track and the outer field. One of the greatest events in high school sports is the annual Volleyball Festival in Phoenix, Arizona (previously in Reno, Nevada until 2009 and Sacramento, California until 2004), which attracted 10,000 players and three thousand coaches for the five-day tournament.

The boys volleyball is popular on a regional base, and by far the largest number of boy teams are in Southern California. However, on the national stage, boy volleyball remains less popular than girls' play at the secondary school level, as evidenced by the following statistics from the NFHS survey mentioned above:

  • For every boy currently competing in high school volleyball, more than eight women are involved.
  • While all states and the District of Columbia agree on girls' volleyball, most states do not allow boys games. Only 23 countries reported participation in boy volleyball, indicating that the sport was not approved in other jurisdictions. Thirteen states reported the participation of more than 10,000 girls in high school, and a quarter (Indiana) fell less than 20 participants who were less than the mark. Of these countries, six do not have high school boys volleyball - Texas (# 1 in women's participation), Michigan (# 4), Minnesota (# 8), Iowa (# 10), Washington (# 12) and Indiana (# 14).
  • Even countries that do voluntary sanctions for both sexes typically have fewer schools sponsoring boys' games and thus fewer participants. Of the remaining eight states of women's participation, there is not even half of the boys competing as women. Even California, with over 40,000 female players, has fewer than 16,000 boys (which is still almost a third of all male players in the country).

In the four years since 2004 to 2008, the participation of high school boy volleyball increased by more than 15%, from about 42,000 to nearly 50,000. However, since 2008, basically there is no growth in boy volleyball volunteer participation.
