"Together We Can Make Music Sweet" is a song co-written by Richard Drapkin and Marty Coleman in 1967. In 1968 it was assigned to the Top Dog Artie Fields label at Detroit and released as 45 by the rhythm and blues singer Joe Towns (Top Dog 105).
When Top Dog was purchased and then absorbed into Motown's stable the song was reissued with the production tasks of Clay McMurray as two singles for The Spinners, originally as the B-Side of "It's a Shame" in V.I.P. Motown Recordings.
Three years later emerged as a single reworked for the main Motown label itself. The next release is to monetize the success of The Spinners since signing for Atlantic Records (and leaving Motown) more than a year earlier. The song narrator tells his love that it is not necessary for them to argue and fight for how strongly their love is when they are together. Two versions of the song were released, both of which were led by one of the group's front men Bobby Smith, with very striking changes.
The first Spinners version is more soulful, and features former G.C. Cameron with the main part on the bridge; this version also appeared on their second album, 2nd Time Around . The second version (released in April, 1973) is more conventional and commercial, remixed with additional customized instrumentation that will sound more like a group hit on Atlantic labels. After re-releasing the song, "Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music", it will reach # 91 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts making it the last Motown single for the chart (and their only Motown song to chart after they left the label). This second version was released on " Best of the Spinners " LP by Motown in the same year.
The song will also be covered by The Supremes twice, both as a duet with The Four Tops and (themselves) as a song for their album New Ways but Staying Love â ⬠.
