History

According to popular accounts, Sylva was named for William D. Sylva, a Danishman who spent a month at the home of General E. R. Hampton, who owns much of the land later developed as the center of Sylva. When the town applied for a post office, Hampton asked her daughter, Mae, what town name should be. He loved the artisan, he said, "Sylva." This account is disputed: according to the 21st-century investigation, the William D. Sylva is not a Danish, and his last name is not Sylva. His last name is "Selvey;" the letter he wrote to the city was most likely in Spanish, not Danish; and he may be from the Little Canada Community. Her daughter's last name is Selvey according to the genealogical archive. Her daughter (who had just come to town) said that her grandfather's surname was "Selvey" instead.

The city became the county seat in 1913 after the county chose to move seats from Webster to Sylva, which acquired the railway station. Furthermore, Webster declined, because the railroads have not stopped in the city. Many businesses follow the courts and trains to Sylva. The magnificent Jackson Court House was built in 1914 and lies dramatically on a hill at the end of Main Street in downtown Sylva. (The building no longer functions as an official courthouse; the Center of Justice was built in 1994, a few blocks away.) Since 2011, Jackson County Court has become the place of Jackson County Public Library.

The city has a local high school, Smoky Mountain High School; county libraries, county hospitals, the Justice Center, and two K-8 primary schools: Scotts Creek east of the city, and Fairview located behind the middle school. The local newspaper is The Sylva Herald , founded in 1926.

Sylva once boasted Dills Cove Falls, which gave her the distinction of being the only city in the United States with a waterfall within its boundaries. The waterfall was destroyed in 1973 to pave the way for 4-way Sylva Bypass (US 74/23). The city has a government-owned first pool west of Asheville. Rocks and concrete pools built in 1938 by WPA during the Great Depression; it was demolished in 1969 to be replaced by the current pool. Thomas Edison and Franklin D. Roosevelt both traveled through Sylva: Edison in 1911 and FDR in 1936, respectively, the last during his presidency.

Downtown Sylva Historic District, Dr. D. D. Hooper House, and Jackson County Courthouse are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Garden

The city has four parks. The Poteet Park and Bridge are both along Scotts Creek and connected by a bridge over a creek. Mark Watson Park is located in a depression behind the historic court building. This area used to be the campus for Elementary School and Sylva Elementary School and, before that, the county fair. Bryson Park is on Chipper Curve Road opposite the Jackson Paper Recycling Plant.

Poteet Park has a large playground, sand volleyball court, basketball court and picnic pavilion. It is located near the Roscoe Poteet Pool, which serves as a community pool and also as a 6-track competition pool for the county swimming team. Bridge Park has a small stage pavilion for outdoor concerts, as well as a bridge that includes Scotts Creek and is connected to Poteet Park. Mark Watson Park has a picnic haven, a playground, two baseball fields, two basketball courts, and four tennis courts. It has two vacant and abandoned old buildings, a large two-storey building built in 1938 as a farm/vocational building building for Sylva High School, and a metal garage building that once housed the Jackson County rescue. Bryson Park has a picnic area, a basketball court and a playground.

Nearby Areas

The Sylva region has many defined and named environments. They:

City Center The historical center of Sylva was once home to many businesses, homes, people, high schools, depots, several industries, and many churches. Today is a historic and beautiful area defined by Main Street and Mill Street, run as BUS 23 through the center of the downtown area, as well as by Cowan Street, at the bottom of Kings Mountain, and Municipal Drive, at College Hill headquarters both define the southern and northern border of the central city center. Crossroads of Chipper Curve Road, BUS 23/East Main Street, and Municipal Drive and Keener Street define the eastern and western boundaries of the main business district. Mark Watson Park and US 23 Business/West Main Street to the west of the city center are also considered part of the city center, since high schools and many industries have been in the area. The area is also defined by several buildings and parks, especially the First Baptist Church of Sylva (1965), CJ Harris Building (1902), First Citizens Bank (1928), Sylva Fire Department (1980), all on Main Street, Roscoe Poteet Public Pond 1969) at Municipal Drive, Hooper House (1906), the last remaining historic house on Main Street, and United Methodist Church of Sylva First (1917) on Jackson Street.

Court House Hill : Named for the 1913 Jackson County Courthouse located at the end of Main Street, Court House Hill was once home to many middle-class and working families, and is within walking distance to the old Central High School and Primary School in what is now Mark Watson Park. It extends to Kings Mountain from Savannah Drive, and returns to Savannah Drive from the courthouse and Main Street. This is defined by Jackson County Courthouse (1913), the new Jackson County Public Library (opened in May 2011, behind the historic court building), Sylva's Bicentennial Park (1976), and the old CJ Harris Hospital (1920). ). Many older homes survive with newer homes, and there are many cheap rental units like the famous Court House Hill Inn Apartments in the old Sylva Hospital and are reportedly haunted. The old historic hospital was cursed and has since been torn down.

Sunrise Park : Located opposite Cope Creek from the intersection of US 23 Business/NC 107, Sunrise Park, formerly known as Rhode's Cove, is a large neighborhood barely visible until entering. It's historically a working-class neighborhood, but has had many middle-class homes added over the past 50 years. This neighborhood is defined by Cherry Street and Sunrise Park Road, both of which allow access to the neighborhood, as well as the Wilkesdale Baptist Church, which is the most prominent and accessible building in the environment from the outside.

Dills Cove : After the Dills Falls location, the neighborhood and fall were cut in half by the construction of the Sylva Bypass, also known as the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway and US 74/23, in 1973. It occupies a cavity that extends little more than one mile from Dillsboro Road and also includes the sub-neighborhoods of Grindstaff Cove, Dillsboro Road, and Sylvan Heights Subdivision. St. Catholic Church Mary (1953), Jackson County Justice Center (1994), and Jackson Plaza (1978) all define the environment. It is also the location of Sylva Post Office and the main entrance to the city center from US 74/23.

College Hill : Named for former Sylva Collegiate Institute, a private Baptist boarding school, which once occupied a hilltop campus in the midst of the neighborhood from 1910 to 1932. All traces of the former institution have all disappeared but for several photographs, notes, stories and plaques commemorating the location of the sign. There are many old homes located in the neighborhood, along with several new homes in the former institute campus. The hill is home to a 50 foot tall water tower (15 m) with stars lit above it, a landmark for those entering Sylva in NC 107/US 23 Business from the south.

Lovedale / Love Field / Fairview : Located near Webster, the neighborhood is centered around the 116th NC section of Fairview Road , and NC 107. Smoky Mountain High School and Fairview Elementary are located here, and it is one of the most southerly neighborhoods located downtown. It has several large box stores and supermarkets, especially Walmart, Lowe, and Ingles supermarkets.

Hall Heights : Located along US 23 Business and NC 107, this neighborhood has two separate residential areas and many businesses are located along the highway. The neighborhood is a hillside area known as Hall Heights, and a trailer park near Scotts Creek known as Bridge Street Trailer Park. Leading buildings include Ensley's Store, Bogarts, and Sylva KFC.

Cope Creek : Located along Cope Creek Road and between NC 107 and US 74/23, Cope Creek's neighborhood is largely residential, with several commercial areas near the highway, including several gas stations, strip malls, fast food restaurants, and banks. Major landmarks include Cody's Hot Spot Gas Station (1998) at the corner of NC 107 and Cope Creek Road (a gas station named Cody's has been in existence since the 1950s), Old Field Church and Cemetery (1830, the church) Scotts Creek Baptist in Beta), and a historic Victorian-style house that doubles as a bed & amp; breakfast. It also appears that more and more development will take place on two hills at the end of NC 107 Cope Creek, due to the fact that the road network has been built on their side and the trees on the hill have largely been cut down..

Dillardtown : Located along Dillardtown Road and extending into the US 23 Business, Dillardtown is the original homestead of the Dillards, who then started a construction company and built a neighborhood between 1948 and 1970. The Eastern Sylva Baptist Church is the dominant building of the neighborhood, with a tall tower and three floors, was built in the mid-1950s and replaces the nearby stone church nearby. Dillardtown is home to a working and middle-class family and has a stock of wooden brick and wooden frames from the 1950s and 1960s.

Flat Tannery : Located east of downtown Sylva, Tannery Weeding is named for Harris-Rees Weeding, which operated on site until 1953. The Mead Corporation opened a factory next to a tannery in 1928 and then buy old tannery. In 1955, Mead expanded and relocated NC 107 and Scotts Creek about 100 feet. It calls for the demolition of some buildings, and A & P supermarkets; built on "reclamation" land. Mead closed in the mid-1980s, and Jackson Paper opened a few years later. This neighborhood extends along Chipper Curve Road and Skyland Drive (both 19/23), and where Bryson Park is located.

Beta (pronounced "Beeta" by some): Located above the Tannery, Beta at one time boasted multiple stores, a church, two-story wooden school, and several industries. This area has been partially annexed by Sylva for many years, and has not seen much commercial development outside restaurants, strip malls, and thrift stores. Several industries have been in Beta, and some houses are located in the area, along with Scotts Creek Elementary School (1951), in an area located between Beta and neighboring Addie. Beta is home to the Scotts Creek Church and is full of lower-class, working-class, and middle-class homes, with some high-end homes located in the area as well. This is one of the rural areas where Sylva is considered. US 74/23 runs around the edge of Beta, and forms a boundary between it and Cope Creek.

Locust Creek : Located at the southernmost section of Sylva, Locust Creek is just below Fairview and is accessed via Old Cullowhee Road and Locust Creek Road. Locust Creek has a semi-solid construction in the lowest area and gets more rural fathers. Locust Creek can also be considered located in Webster or Cullowhee. The neighborhood is made up largely of middle-class families, and most of the lower areas were built in the 1960s and 1970s.

East Sylva : Located east of downtown Sylva, East Sylva covers the area along US 23 Business and early Skyland Drive (Old US 19-23). It is home to several shopping centers, two supermarkets, city cinemas, known as Quin Theaters (1980), gas stations, and fast food restaurants, playing close to US 23 Business out of US 74/23 in Sylva. Regional Hospital C.J. Harris County (1959) is also located here. Some houses are in the area, but East Sylva is largely commercial development.
