In the UK, for qualification to be recognized as part of one of the UK's qualification frameworks: the Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF), the Credit Framework and Qualification for Wales (CQFW) or the Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF) in England and Northern Ireland, awarded by an awarding body recognized by either a government-appointed regulatory body or (for higher education qualifications at SCQF and QCFW) is awarded by the agency with the power of awarding a degree. Regulatory bodies are Ofqual in UK, Council for Curriculum, Exam & amp; Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland, Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) in Scotland and Wales Qualifications in Wales; The Quality Assurance Agency covers all providers of higher education in the UK and maintains the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ).

There are over 200 of these Body Gifts on the Regulated Qualification List (covering UK and Northern Ireland). Some experts in a particular field. Others specify on qualification types, such as 'A' level, GCSE and vocational competencies or knowledge-based qualifications.

Awarding bodies do not always provide courses that lead to qualifications. Often the awarding agency will give approval process to independent training providers who, if they meet the criteria, can provide qualifications accredited by the granting agency.

The RQF qualification of the awarding agency is always clearly identified as one of the 9 Levels. It starts with 'Entrance Level' (which is subdivided into three sub-levels) and then run from Level One to Level Eight. This level is common across various frameworks in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, including FHEQ (which starts at level 4), allowing qualifying difficulties to be equated, for example level 6 is at the same difficulty level as the undergraduate degree and level 8 on the difficulty level same with doctoral degree. Levels used in Scotland are different from those in the UK, but are still common in SQA and higher education qualifications, with level 10 being on the same difficulty level as honorary degrees and 12 doctoral degrees. There is a correspondence between the UK framework and the European Qualification Framework (EQF) as follows:

The qualification also has a credit size, using Credit Credit 1 credit = 10 hours of work or nominal study (called Total Qualification Time in RQF). At the RQF, the terms 'Awards', 'Certificates' and 'Diplomas' are used to differentiate qualifications from 1 to 12 credits, 13 to 36 credits and 37 credits each. The academic year is taken to consist of 120 credits, and a full calendar year of 180 credits, so a bachelor's degree with praise typically a total of 360 credits (split at FHEQ level 4-6) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland or 480 credits (split equally in all levels of SCQF 7-10) in Scotland, while a doctoral degree (if credit is used) is 540 credits at FHEQ 8/SCQF level 12. By comparison, the highest RQF qualification at level 8, CMI Level 8 Diploma in Strategic Direction and Leadership, has a size of 67 credits.
