Distance learning is a memorization technique based on repetition. The idea is that one will be able to quickly recall the meaning of more repetitive material. Some alternatives to learning memorization include meaningful learning, associative learning, and active learning.

The Rote method is routinely used when fast memorization is required, such as learning someone's line in playing or memorizing phone numbers.

Rote learning is widely used in the mastery of basic knowledge. Examples of school topics where memorization is often used include reading phonic, periodic table in chemistry, multiplication tables in mathematics, anatomy in medicine, cases or laws in law, basic formulas in any science, etc. By definition, rote memorization of understanding, so by itself it is an ineffective tool in mastering a complex subject at an advanced level. For example, one illustration of rote learning can be observed in preparing for the exam quickly, a technique that can be called colloquial as "cramming".

Distance learning is sometimes underestimated by terms that degrade parrot mode , regurgitation , cram , or mugging because the person engaging in rote learning can give the wrong impression of having understood what they have written or said. This is strongly discouraged by many new curriculum standards. For example, the standards of science and mathematics in the United States specifically emphasize the importance of deep understanding of the recall of facts, which are considered less important. The National Council of Mathematics Teachers states:

More than ever, mathematics must include mastery of concepts, not just memorizing and following procedures. More than ever, school mathematics should include an understanding of how to use technology to reach meaningfully on solutions to problems rather than the endless attention to computational boredom that is out of date.

However, traditional educational advocates have criticized the new American standard as underestimating basic fact learning and basic arithmetic, and replacing content with process-based skills. In mathematics and science, rote methods are often used, eg memorizing formulas. There is a greater understanding if students do a formula for memory through exercises that use formulas rather than through the repetition of rote from formulas. The newer standards often recommend that students obtain their own formulas to achieve the best understanding. Nothing is faster than memorization if the formula has to be studied quickly for tests and rote methods that will soon be able to help to make facts understood to memory. However, students who learn with understanding can transfer their knowledge to tasks that require problem solving with greater success than those who only learn by rote.

On the other hand, those who disagree with my inquiry-based philosophy argue that students must first develop computational skills before they can understand the mathematical concepts. These people will argue that time is better spent on training skills than in investigations that create alternatives, or justify more than one correct answer or method. In this view, estimating the answers is not sufficient and, in fact, is considered to depend on strong basic skills. Studying abstract mathematical concepts is deemed to depend on a solid foundation of basic tools. Thus, these people believe that learning to memorize is an important part of the learning process.

In computer science

Re-learning is also used to describe the simple learning patterns used in machine learning, although it does not involve repetition, unlike the usual meaning of rote. The machine is programmed to store the calculation history and compare the new input to the input and output history, retrieve the saved output if it exists. This pattern requires the machine to be modeled as a pure function - always generating the same output for the same input - and can be formally described as follows:
