The Michigan-Michigan State basketball competition is a college basketball competition between Michigan Wolverines men's basketball and men's Michigan State Spartans basketball which is part of a larger intrastate competition between the University of Michigan and the existing Michigan State University across a wide spectrum of efforts including their common athletic program: Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans. In the field, athletic competition includes the Paul Bunyan Trophy and the Michigan-Michigan State ice hockey competition, but extends to almost all sports and many other forms of achievement. Both teams are members of the Big Ten Conference. Competition has been proven both in court and out of court. Among court elements of the competition, recruiting basketball talent has resulted in a battle, the most prominent of which turned into the University of Michigan basketball scandal when the two schools searched for services from Mateen Cleaves.

Series history

Michigan is currently leading the series, which began on January 9, 1909. As a result of the Big Ten moved to 11 teams with the addition of Penn State, the team were not guaranteed two games against each other. Thus, the school chose to play one game that did not count as a conference game in 1997.

A 1996 rollover accident during Michigan recruitment Mateen Cleaves led to a lengthy investigation surrounding the University of Michigan basketball scandal. Cleaves was finally accepted at Michigan State.

Despite the intense competition to recruit basketball and the resources and intensity of competition in other sports, the competition has not been intense (as measured by rank) on the basketball court until 2010 when the team meets 7 times in a row as opposed to the rankings.

On February 12, 2013, for the first time in the series' 170-game history, since 1909, the team met while both were ranked Top 10. Spartan (20-4, 9-2 Big Ten) is ranked No. 1. 8 in AP Top 25 Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll, while Wolverines (21-3, 8-3 Big Ten) is ranked No. 1. 4 in the AP polls and No. 5 in the coach's poll. Michigan State won the game at Breslin Center, 75-52. The following month, both teams once again ranked in the Top 10, this time Michigan is at the end of the game being played at Crisler Center, with a score of 58-57.

Indiana Mr. Basketball for 2012, Gary Harris, and 2013 Indiana Mr. Basketball Zak Irvin is a teammate at Hamilton Southeastern High School, but Irvin signed with Michigan after Harris joined Michigan State. Both are good friends from third grade to high school and even bet on January 17, 2012 games in high school after both are committed to a different basketball program, with Harris having to wear corn and blue for a day as a result.

By the time of the first game of 2013-14 Big Ten of the team, Bill Bender felt the competition was the best in the Big Ten largely due to the team's superiority in the previous three seasons. With Michigan State riding 11 consecutive wins, including seven in the conference, and Michigan driving eight consecutive wins, including six in the conference, the Jan. 25 game marked the first time in the Big Ten history that both teams had encountered when both teams were 6-0 or better in game conferences. (# 21/# 25T) Michigan beat (# 3/# 3) Spartans 80-75. This is the first time Michigan ever beat three consecutive AP polls of ten opponents and marked the first time since 1986-87 Iowa Hawkeyes that each team has won three games in a row against the top 10 opponents. It also gave the team a consecutive winning streak against the top five opponents after 36 games lost a streak against them. Michigan 7-0 Big Ten start is the best since the 1976-77 team won its first eight games.

Both teams advance to the 2014 Big Conference Tournament championship in 2014, marking the first time they face each other in the postseason tournament, and the first time they play three matches against each other in a single season. Michigan State won by a score of 69-55 securing an automatic bid conference to the NCAA Tournament. For the first competitive contest of the 2014-15 Big Ten season, Michigan alumnus Nik Stauskas and Michigan State alumnus Draymond Green, the Top Ten Basketballers of the Year 2014 and 2012 Best Player of the Year, respectively, have published the Twitter wars words and bet on game.

On February 12, 2013, new student Mitch McGary started his first career in the NCAA for Wolverines against Spartan, featuring Adreian Payne in the starting lineup. After Payne (15th) and McGary (21st) were both selected in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft, McGary made his first NBA start on March 13, 2015 for Thunder City Oklahoma 2014-15, with Payne in the starting lineup for the 2014-15 Minnesota Timberwolves as opposing forces.

Incoming classes for the 2017-18 Big Ten Conference men's basketball season include teammate Jordan Poole and Jaren Jackson Jr. who joined Michigan and Michigan State respectively after working together to win the 2017 National High School Championship.

Mr. Finalist Formation Basketball of Michigan 2018 consists entirely of ten recruiting conferences, including two players for Michigan and two for Michigan State. Michigan State's Foster Loyer (3,691 points) won, while Brandon Johns Michigan (2,792) and David DeJulius (2,542) were second and third respectively. Marcus Bingham, MSU's recruitment, is the fourth player to attend one of the competitors.

Other elements of the competition are that Michigan (1964, 1992 *, 1993 * and 2018) and Michigan State (1999 and 2001) are the only two schools that have hockey teams and their basketball teams qualify for the four NCAA finals of the Men's Ice Hockey Championships and Tournaments NCAA Men's Division Basket I in the same season.
