Community services are non-paid work performed by a single person or group of people for the benefit of the community or its agencies. Community services are different from volunteers, as they are not always voluntary. Personal benefits can be realized, but can be done for a variety of reasons including citizenship requirements, replacement of criminal justice sanctions, school or class requirements, and conditions for receiving certain benefits.

Community service is a nonpayment work performed by one person or group of people for the benefit of the community or its institutions. Community services are different from volunteers, as they are not always voluntary. This can be done for various reasons.
- This may be required by the government as part of the citizenship requirement, generally in lieu of military service.
- This may be required in lieu of, or in addition, other criminal justice sanctions - when done for this reason, it may also be referred to as the return of society .
- This may be mandated by the school to meet classroom requirements, such as in the case of service learning or to meet graduation requirements as the class is pronouncing a farewell speech.
- In the UK, certain acceptance conditions have been created, including those related to disability. (see Workfare in the UK)
- In Sweden it is an experimental punishment called "samhÃÆ'ällstjÃÆ'änst" ("community service").

Reason
High school graduation and community work
Some jurisdictions of education in the United States require students to undertake hours of community service to graduate from high school. In some high schools in Washington, for example, students must complete 200 hours of community service to obtain a diploma. Some Washington school districts, including Seattle Public Schools, distinguish between community service and "service learning," which requires students to show that their work has contributed to their education. If a student in high school takes an AVID course, public service is often required. Whether an American public school could require a volunteer hour for high school graduation is challenged in Immediato v. Rye Neck School District , but the court found no offense.
Many other secondary schools do not require hours of community service for graduation, but still see an impressive number of students engaged in their community. For example, in Palo Alto, California, students at Palo Alto High School record about 45,000 hours of community service each year. As a result, College College and Career Centers provide approximately 250-300 students of President Voluntary Service Awards each year for their hard work.
Colleges
Although not technically considered a requirement, many universities incorporate community service as an unofficial requirement for acceptance. However, some colleges prefer work experience over community services, and some require that their students continue community service for certain hours to graduate. Some schools also offer unique "community service" courses, giving credit to students completing a certain number of hours of community service. Some academic honors communities, together with some fraternities and college associations in North America, need community service to join and others require every member to continue to do community service.
Many student organizations exist for the purpose of community service, the largest of which is Alpha Phi Omega. Community service projects are also undertaken by student associations and fraternities.
Beginning in the 1980s, colleges began to use learning services as pedagogy. The college presidential partnership began in 1985 with the initiative of improving community services in their colleges. The Alliance is called the Compact Campus, leading the way for many other schools to adopt courses and learning-service activities.
The course of service-learning varies considerably over time, quality, and in the "service" and "learning" balance that is emphasized in the course. However, a typical service-learning course, has these factors in general:
- Service components where students spend time serving in communities that meet actual needs
- Learning component where students seek or be taught information - often interpersonally and academically - are integrated into their services
- The reflection component linking shared services and learning
Reflection is sometimes denoted by a hyphen in the term "service-learning" to show that it has a central role in learning by serving. Reflection is just a scheduled consideration of one's experience and thoughts. It can take many forms, including journals, blogs, and discussions.
The service-learning courses present material learning in context, which means that students often learn effectively and tend to apply what has been learned. Like the book Where is Lesson in Service-Learning? notes, "Students who engage in service learning engage in authentic situations; they know real people whose lives are affected by this problem... As a result, they have many real questions they want to answer." so, students are interested and motivated to learn the material to solve their questions.
Community service learning seeks to connect or reconnect students by serving their community after they complete their course. This creates a bridge to the lack of community service found among college-age people in the United States.
Community service devotion
The ministry may be able to take something from experience and be able to use new knowledge or interpersonal inventions to enhance their future slavery and the people around them. To get the most out of community service requires a balanced learning with service. Learn and serve while enhancing the community of students while teaching life lessons and building character.
Community service learning is "about leadership development as well as traditional information and skills acquisition." Therefore, the combination of people doing the service and learning at the same time teaches them how to be effective and, more importantly, how to be effective about what is important to them. This improves the overall app experience and opportunity they get from it. By adding services to learning, and balancing both, community service can be more than just a simple act of serving. Small steps are needed to create big changes and this is the expectation of learning services to achieve. By being a classroom, a hands-on learning experience, and an opportunity to change the community, people can not only serve, but also influence themselves.
Definition of Community Learning Service
In order for community service learning to be applied and well understood, we must begin with a good definition of service learning. According to Fayetteville State University, "Learning services are a process of engaging students in community service activities combined with facilitated means to apply experience for their own academic and personal development. This is a form of experiential education aimed at enhancing and enriching student learning in the course When compared to other forms of experiential learning such as apprenticeship and cooperative education, this is similar to student-centered, direct and direct applicable to the curriculum. "
Professor Freddy Cardoza defines Community Service-Learning as "Service learning is a pedogogy (or a special teaching-learning approach) that has several lectures, and is a more interactive hand on educational strategies that give instruction students while leading them through meaningful community services. experience and engage them in personal reflection on those experiences to build character and to teach people problem solving skills and responsibility. "Professor Cardoza stressed that it is important for a student to spend time and reflect on what they experience, see, do and what problems they face and how they will apply what they have learned to solve this problem. In other words, learning services aim to connect personal and interpersonal development with cognitive development, as well as equip students with critical knowledge to help them understand the world.
Character.org defines Service-Learning in this way: "Service learning differs from community service in several key ways Learning services include student leadership, reflective and academic components, and opportunities for celebration after service activities have been successfully completed Students reflect community needs, how to help, and once their service is done, they can internalize how their efforts have helped, while learning more about academics such as geography, mathematics, or science. "
From this definition, we can find our own definition of Community Service: "Teaching methods that take what is taught in the classroom and equip students to apply that knowledge in real-world situations, while equipping them to take their place in the world, becoming citizens who better, and become an active social and economic problem solver. "
Court ordered service
Persons convicted of crimes may be required to engage in community service or work for institutions in the jurisdiction of the penalty either wholly or in part in lieu of other remedies and penalties, such as detention or fines. For example, fines can be reduced in return for the specified number of hours of community service. Courts may allow defendants to choose their community services, which should then be documented by "trustworthy agencies," such as nonprofits, or may require certain services.
Sometimes the punishment is specifically aimed at the crime of the defendant, for example, a handyman may have to clear a park or roadside, or a drunk driver may appear in front of a school group to explain why drunk driving is a crime. Also, the allowing sentence for a wider choice may prohibit certain services that the offender is reasonable to perform; for example, a convicted lawyer may be specifically prohibited from counting the legal services of pro bono.
Some employers engage their staff in some kind of community service program, such as with United Way of America. It may be entirely voluntary or working conditions, or anything in between.
In addition, about 40% of Fortune 500 companies offer voluntary grants programs in which companies make monetary donations to nonprofit organizations in recognition of their employee volunteerism (Example $ 500 volunteers after 25 hours of community service).
Examples around the world
Community services in the United States are often similar to those in Canada. In Europe and Australia, community service is the choice for many criminal penalties as an alternative to detention. In the United Kingdom, public services are now officially referred to by the Central Office as an obligatory undertaking for unpaid mandatory . Unpaid compulsory work covers up to 300 hours of activity, such as conservation work, cleaning of graffiti, or working with charities. The Howard League for Penal Reform (the world's oldest prison reform organization) is a leading advocate for improving community penalties for reducing prison populations and improving rehabilitation.
Beginning in 2010, Danish High School students receive a special diploma if they complete at least 20 hours of volunteer work.
The International Baccalaureate program requires 50 hours of community service, along with a written reflection on the services performed, to meet the 150-hour CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) requirements and receive the IB Diploma.
Florence Nightingale applied the nature of nursing entrepreneurship to help improve the unstable hospital conditions during the mid-1800s. His job is composed of forward planning on what it takes to be different and how he will strive to change things for the better, act on the ideas he produces, and finally leave the notebook of ideas and recommendations to help the next generation. preventing the same disaster with a very high mortality rate occurring again. Not only did he organize a fundraiser to raise money for the hospital and set up a more stable living conditions to improve the health of the soldiers in the hospital, but he also got rid of the people who lost their jobs and delegated tasks to the more capable, sometimes having to do the work itself. He grew up with the desire to help people or anything that needed help. Her passion for helping and ministering to others grew as she got older and although she did not get support from her family, she pursued her dream and sacrificed her life for others. His work is a symbol of community service. He is not afraid to do difficult things if he knows it will make things better or as NiccolÃÆ'ò Machiavelli says, "[T] here nothing is harder to do, or more doubting the success, or more dangerous to deal with, rather than starting a new sequence of things... "Florence Nightingale is quoted as writing" The first thought I can remember, and the last one is nursing work. "He serves a certain group of people and benefits society - which is community service.
Community services for institutions
Many institutions require and/or provide incentives to students or employees to contribute their time to community service programs. From volunteering to participating in charity events such as walking or running, the institute continues to practice or require their employees or students to grow in friendship while giving back to communities. Many agencies also provide opportunities for employees and students to work together, and most student groups participate in the form of their own community services. Each one is unique in its own right; all of which are very popular among employees; and in all these programs, human resources play an integral role. One such program, Johns Hopkins University, under the leadership of Johns Hopkins University President Ronald J. Daniels and chief executive of Baltimore City Schools, human resources department and university community affairs working with the school system to develop Johns Hopkins Takes Time to School program in the year 2009, launched it on March 3, 2010. The program is a service partnership aimed at providing support and assistance to Baltimore Municipal Schools (BCS) while providing faculty and road staff for community services, offering their talents to youth cities and improving administrative and education from the school system in the area. Some agencies even give their students or employees a guaranteed number of days or weeks of leave for certain acceptable community service programs. One such example is East Carolina University, which provides 24 hours of community service leave for full time employees per year as incentives and compensation for community services.
Religious reason to serve
Beyond the necessary public services, some religious groups emphasize serving one's community. These groups and churches reach out by holding Vacation Bible Schools for children, making Red Cross blood sacrifices, after falling carnival, or offering free food. Through this service, the church can benefit the environment and the family. Some churches create non-profit organizations that can help the community. The crisis pregnancy center is often run by religious groups to promote pro-life values ââin local families. To meet the needs of the poor, some churches provide food kitchens or start homeless shelters. Also, certain churches provide daycare so busy parents can work.
Christian Services
Christianity, the foundation of thousands of service organizations, holds many strong beliefs about community service. Christians view serving in one's church and community as a way of showing God's unconditional love. According to the Christian Bible, 1 Peter 4: 10-11 (NIV) says:
"Each of you must use whatever gifts you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards who are faithful in various forms." If anyone speaks, they must do so as the person who speaks the words of God. who minister, they must do so with the power that God provides, so that in all things God can be praised through Jesus Christ, for him to be glory and strength forever. "Amen."
These verses are the basis for the Christian belief in outreach using one's ability, which they believe is given by God. According to Dr. Freddy Cardoza, a teacher at Biblical Biola University, Christians are called to serve people because everyone is made in God's image. Christianity teaches that Jesus is a perfect example of serving during His time on earth. Jesus Christ healed the sick, fed thousands, and died for all mankind. Dedicated Christians see the importance of community service to show God's love and to spread the gospel further.
In addition, Christian beliefs state that they hold dual citizenship, both in the kingdom of Heaven and the kingdom of the earth. They believe that they have a responsibility to live their lives to be full on earth, reaching out to others and meeting their needs, but also living in such a way as to prepare eternity spent in Heaven. This means that they must be invested in both kingdoms, and everything they do should incorporate this thinking. 2 Corinthians 9: 12-13 (NIV translation of the Bible) says:
"The service you do not only supplies the needs of God's people but also abounds in many expressions of gratitude to God.Because of the ministry you have proved yourself, others will praise the Lord for the obedience that accompanies your confession, from the gospel of Christ, and for mercy your heart in sharing with them and with others. "
These verses illustrate the act of meeting the needs of the community, while also acting with the Kingdom of Heaven in mind by encouraging spiritual growth in these individuals. Because Christians believe that all human beings are created in God's image, they believe that this means that they are God's eternal representation for everyone they contact. It adds meaning to everything they do and say to serve others. If they do not do their best to serve the physical and spiritual needs of others, they are not a good representative of God's love.
Examples of Christian community services
Many notable non-governmental (NGO) public service organizations are established by Christians who try to practice their beliefs. Three prominent examples are Samaritan's Purse, Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity.
Samaritan's Purse was inspired by the evangelist's prayer Robert Pierce, "Let my heart break with the things that break the heart of God." After traveling through Asia and seeing firsthand the plight of poor children, lepers, and orphans - in 1970, Pierce founded Samaritan's Purse. Today, Samaritan's Purse reaches out to millions of people around the world by providing assistance such as disaster relief, medical aid, and childcare. The famous Samaritan's Purse project is Operation Christmas Child led by Franklin Graham.
The Salvation Army was founded by William Booth and his wife Catherine Booth in 1865. Booth was a Methodist minister and evangelist on the streets of London. His army meetings gathered a crowd of drunks, prostitutes and thieves who eventually became the first "army" in the military, which had grown to 1,442,388 members in 126 countries. The motto of the Salvation Army is "Doing the Most Good" and doing it by providing assistance such as shelter, food, clothing, spiritual training, and disaster relief.
Habitat for Humanity provides housing for people in need. Founded by Millard Fuller, his vision is to "... put God's love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hopes." Habitat for Humanity has built or repaired more than 800,000 homes and served over 4 million people worldwide since its founding in 1976. They describe their vision as "... a world in which everyone has a decent place to live."
Personal benefits serving
Community services also enable those who participate to reflect the differences they make in society. Some community service project participants may find themselves gaining a greater understanding of their role in society, as well as the impact of their contribution to those in need of service. Because community service outlets vary, those serving are exposed to different types of people, environments, and situations.
With each new community service project, some participants can gain profound experience in various fields. Participants may also internalize information they find personally insightful for future use. While only doing valuable community service to the recipients, those who serve often find it useful to pause and think about how they change society for the better. Schools often take students on community service projects so they can learn how their individual actions affect public welfare. Participants may find that serving the public fosters a more solid view of self and purpose.
Those involved in community service learning can also find that after serving the community for a long period of time, they have an advantage in real-world experience. Finally, the skills and knowledge gained while working with the community can be applied in the field of work in the future. Community services can also improve participants' social connectivity. Since most community service opportunities allow others to interact and work with other individuals, these services can help volunteers network and connect with others toward common goals.
People get the most out of their community service projects when they donate their time to help people they've never contacted before. This direct contact allows people to see life from different perspectives and reevaluate their opinions about others. Many young people who are involved in community service come up with a wider world view.
Another benefit in participating in community service is greater understanding and appreciation of diversity. Respecting other cultures and knocking down stereotypes is essential to being a responsible citizen and a better person. By participating in a community service project where interaction is necessary, personal relationships can begin to grow. This personal relationship helps people have an informal and consistent interaction over time, often destroying negative stereotypes. This relationship can also facilitate more opinions and perspectives around the various topics that help participants to grow in diversity. Stereotypes can be defined as, "believe it is unfair that all people or objects with certain characteristics are equal." Stereotypes often reveal themselves in rapid judgment only on the basis of visible characteristics. This assessment turns into a biased opinion when you believe that this judgment is always true. These stereotypes can be harmful to relationships and personal relationships in the workplace. Community Service helps people to realize that everyone does not fall into these preconceived ideas. Along with tearing down stereotypes, community service work can help people in realizing that those who help and work with them are no different from themselves. This awareness can cause empathy with others. Learning to understand the needs and motivations of others, especially those who live a life different from ourselves, is an important part of a productive life. This leads to a humanitarian view that can help a person stay free of other people's biased opinions and can lead to a more diverse life and ultimately more productive and stimulating thinking.
Choose the right strategy
As de Tocqueville points out, America, very different from other developed countries, has a remarkable ability to form associations. Civilians have a unique desire and talent to set themselves apart from the government to address the needs of their communities. However, ensuring that efforts have a positive effect on society requires clear analysis and strategy. The analysis identifies the root of the problem to be solved by the project implementation. Individuals, like the environment, enjoy permanent change only if it is part of - and the greatest form of community service encourages inner change.
Abraham Kuyper advocates the sovereignty of the ball, which respects the independence and autonomy of "intermediary agencies" in society, such as school, press, business, art, etc. He won the right of every community to operate. its own organizations and managing its own group, with the fundamental belief that parents know what their children really need, and that the local people are better able to help their fellow locals. Those who agree with his views view community service as a "trampoline" that seeks to launch their targets for better jobs and lifestyles, avoiding what they see as destructive decision-making for objectives badly defined by community service efforts that less developed.
Amy L. Sherman, in his book Restorers of Hope, suggests that community service planning should be made with a valuable opinion of the local population, as they have a direct knowledge of the inner reality of their current community circumstances.. Make them a part of the movement, change or project creates in the community members a sense of belonging and hope. Shared endeavor: relationship - this makes a difference.
