A Tribe Called Quest

In 1985, Q-Tip, along with Phife Dawg's friends, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White, founded the critically acclaimed hip hop group, A Tribe Called Quest. The band signed a contract with Jive Records and released five studio albums during the initial run, splitting up in 1998.

After the outbreak of the Tribe in 1998, Q-Tip pursued a solo career. Pitchfork noted about changes in tenor, commenting, "Abstract storytellers and social critics have been replaced by MCs that are barely recognizable and obsessed with sex."

The release of his 2002 follow-up, Kamaal/The Abstract , was delayed despite being critically acclaimed and issuing catalog numbers; Arista believes that it has no commercial appeal. Finally leaked onto the Internet, and the promotional copy distribution caused several publications to run album reviews. The album was finally released on September 15, 2009, on Battery Records after being kept for seven years.

Following his work at Kamaal/The Abstract , Q-Tip was featured on R.E.M. 2004 Around the Sun , with rap on "The Outsiders". On February 7, 1998, a fire broke out at the Q-Tip home recording studio, completely destroying it; among the items destroyed in the blaze are the entire collection of recordings, consisting of nearly 20,000 records, and a computer containing many unreleased songs. He called the fire "symbolic", because he had no notes to sample, but still had a desire to make music. The following year, he began searching for musicians for live bands, taking drum lessons from Omar Hakim, learning bel canto, and taking piano lessons from Weldon Irvine, which he took for the single Tribe "Award Tour". Q-Tip has since rebuilt its record collection, which now consists of about 9,000 records.
