Nigeria

In Nigeria, physiotherapy training is a Bachelor degree of Physiotherapy (BPhysio) or Bachelor of Medicine (BMR) for 5 years. A 1-year clinical education program under the supervision of a senior and experienced physiotherapist is required upon graduation from an accredited University before a new graduate can be licensed to train as a physiotherapist. The first training program in Nigeria began at the University of Ibadan in 1966, followed by the University of Lagos in 1971. A training program also began at the Ife University (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1978, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus in 1987, University Bayero, Kano in 1989, Maiduguri University, Maiduguri in 2003. Other training programs are also available at Maiduguri University and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi. Advanced Master's Degrees and Doctor of Philosophy in Physiotherapy (MSc Physio and PhD) are available at Ibadan University, the University of Lagos, the University of Obafemi Awolowo, and the University of Nigeria, the Enugu Campus. Currently, the Nigerian Physiotherapy Society (The professional body representing the Nigerian physiotherapist) and the Medical Rehabilitation Therapy Agency (Registration) (the governing body that regulates training and professional practice of rehabilitation therapy in Nigeria) are making plans to transit Nigerian undergraduate degree programs to entry level doctoral program.

South Africa

In South Africa, Physiotherapists are first-line practitioners (ie, a health professional who can diagnose and treat independently), can refer patients to medical practitioners and X-Ray imaging specialists and issue a disease certificate. There are eight schools of physiotherapy, usually affixed to the medical school concerned.

Undergraduate degree (B.PhysT, B.Sc. (Physio) or B.Physio) consists of four years of general practice training, which involves all aspects of the discipline. Usually, the first year consists of most of the theory ("basic science") instruction, while the latter includes a focus on human anatomy and-physiology. Gradually, the time spent in supervised practice increases until the fourth year, where students generally spend about 80% in practice. In their final year, students are also expected to complete a variety of research projects, which meet the Honors degree requirements. At the graduate level, some universities offer job-based master's degrees (MPhysT, M.Sc. (Physio)) that focus on specific areas of practice, and include a "mini dissertation". The research-based degree is the MSc. and Ph.D. (Physio).

Upon graduation, professional practice may be performed only after the completion of a regulated country, the mandatory year of community service. Practicing physiotherapists are also required to enroll with the South African Health Professional Council, the registration body for physiotherapists into the Professional Council for Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Biokinetic. They are often asked to be trained in life support for emergencies in their departments and private practice.

Uganda

Physiotherapist training in Uganda began in 1972. This three-year diploma course is still running at the Uganda Institute of Health and Management (formerly Mulago Paramedic Training School).

The first level courses at a public institution begin at the University of Science and Technology Mbarara in 2012.

All graduates must be registered with the Uganda Allied Professional Health Board and then be able to work as autonomous practitioners in government and private health facilities.

Australia

In Australia, several different courses are available at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Physiotherapy degree can be done for four years as a bachelor degree or two to three years post-graduate with initial components that theoretically include basic anatomy, biology, physics, psychology, kinesiology, goniometry and physiology. In the second half of the student degree takes part in a practical component that focuses on musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neuromuscular physiotherapy, pediatric physiotherapy, geriatric physiotherapy, cardiothoracic physiotherapy, and women's health. The program generally develops with an increasingly clinical focus and usually last year involving practical placement in clinics, and research. Australian programs include B.Physio, B.App.Sc.Physio, B.Sc.Physio, M.Physio, or D.Physio degrees.

Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, the Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (BPT) program is provided by the Dhaka University Faculty of Medicine, Rajshahi University, and Gono University.

The CPM curriculum includes Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology & amp; Microbiology, Biomechanics, Radiology & amp; Imaging, Orthopedics & amp; Rheumatology, Pediatrics, Pharmacology, Neurology, Kinesiology, Electrotherapy, Exercise Therapy, Community Medicine, Psychology, Cardiopulmonary, General Surgery, Research Methodology, Geriatrics, Psychiatry, Sports Physiotherapy, Orthopedic Medicine, Ethics and Professional Management, Teaching Methodology, Rehabilitation Treatment ) & amp; Development), Prosthetics & amp; Orthotic Projects and Research. The curriculum has been designed so that graduate physiotherapists can practice independently and independently in their clinical field.

There are seven affiliated institutes:

  • National Institute of Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Traumatology (NITOR) (government agency)
  • Bangladesh Private Health Organization (private)
  • State Health Sciences College (SCHS) (private)
  • Institute of Health Technology (IHT) - Dhaka (government)
  • Institute of Health Technology (IHT) - Rajshahi (government)
  • Gono Bishwabidyalay (GONO University) (private)
  • The SAIC Institute of Medical Technology (SIMT) (personal), which provides professional education for five years including a one-year compulsory internship.

The Bangladesh University community is a pioneer in the private sector but they are putting a stop to all Health Sciences programs due to some unexpected legal issues.

Two institutions offer post graduation in Physiotherapy. Gono Bishwabidyalay (GONO University) offers the only Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) clinical and BHPI offers a MSc.Pt non-clinical postgraduate program. Bangladesh Physical Therapy Association is the only professional organization and trade of Bangladeshi physical therapists. Other organizations recognized under the Ministry of Social Affairs are named the Bangladesh Physiotherapy Association working as social welfare organizations. The Bangladeshi Physiotherapy Association received international recognition from WCPT (2007) in Vancouver led by several condensed physiotherapists (one year BSc). Just after the liberation war Bangladesh began a three-year Physiotherapy Graduation course in 1972. The event was initiated by Professor Dr. R J Garst first at the National Institute of Traumatology & amp; Orthopedics and Rehabilitation (NITOR). After that BHPI started a one year BSC (Hons) program to raise the technologist who is the main pedestal of the profession there.

In Bangladesh physical therapists use the prefix of Dr. and suffix as PT. There is still no regulatory body for professional physical therapists. The Bangladesh government established a joint board called "Therapeutic and Rehabilitation Council" in the country.

Hong Kong

In 1978, the Hong Kong Polytechnic first offered a higher diploma program in Physiotherapy under the Institute of Medical and Health Care (IMHC), Hong Kong Polytechnic. In 1991, the PT program was converted into a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree program. In Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the sole provider of a full-time degree in Physiotherapy.

India

In India, the university offers diplomas, bachelors, masters and PhDs in Physiotherapy. The Diploma course is usually three years old and registration has been reduced since the introduction of Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) in the early 1990s in India. Most students with a diploma have chosen to enter laterally into a Bachelor's program.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) is a 4 and a half year undergraduate program in physiotherapy with 6 months of compulsory clinical internships; which usually spins. They have almost similar subjects such as graduation programs of PT in developed countries and can practice independently or mutidisiplin. However, due to the lack of a National Council, the CPM syllabus varies from one state to another in that country.

After graduation Physiotherapist (PTs') can go for further specialization in Cardiovascular & amp; Pulmonary physiotherapy, Community Physiotherapy, Neurology, Musculoskeletal, Hands, Sports, Obs-Gynecology, or Do Research.

PT in India using the title 'Doctor' and start before their name with the suffix P.T. (Physiotherapist) so that makes them clear that they are not a doctor of medicine. However, the use of the title 'Dr' according to the IAP (Indian Association of Physiotherapist) is based on tradition and convention and is used in the same manner as used by MBBS/MS/BDS/MDS/BHMS/BAMS/BNYS/BUMS title holder. PTs contend that they do not violate any law applicable in India because legally only people who have earned a degree in MD/DM or Phd are justified to use and prefix the title 'Doctor'.

There are over 250 colleges offering undergraduate programs in physiotherapy (BPT) and over 50 colleges offering a master in Physiotherapy (MPT) with a duration of two years. MUHS (Maharashtra) and several other universities in India hold a 3-year MPT graduate degree. PhD in Physiotherapy is also offered at selected universities in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and Delhi.

A.M.U. Aligarh started Physiotherapy & amp; Rehabilitation is very early but they have not improved it yet.

Jamia Hamdard took the lead in initiating the Post-Graduate program in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy in North India in 1998. The courses were well received and highly desirable. Faculty receive active assistance and support from well-known hospitals in Delhi to train students, in addition to utilizing Majeedia Hospital. The Jamia is in the process of building a separate building for the Allied Health Sciences Faculty with the generous grant aid from UGC. The Faculty offers Master and Bachelors study programs in Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.

Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute for the Physical Disability is an autonomous organization under the administrative and financial control of the Ministry of Social Justice & amp; Empowerment, Government of India. The Institute for Physical Disability began to form when the Jawahar Lal Nehru Institute formerly known as Physical Treatment and Rehabilitation and other related institutions run by the council for Paralyzed and Disabled Assistance was taken over by the Government of India on May 22, 1975 and converted into an autonomous body in 1976. renamed after Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya in 2002. This institute provides Bachelor of Physical Therapy, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and Bachelor of Prosthetics & amp; Orthotics, a 4 Ã, ½ year duration course in affiliation with the University of Delhi.

New Zealand

In New Zealand, there are currently two physiotherapy schools offering four-year undergraduate programs. Many New Zealand physiotherapists working in private health care systems as musculoskeletal physiotherapists and curricula reflect the need to prepare graduates for autonomous practice. Students attend an education program similar to Australia with an emphasis on biomechanics, kinesiology, and sports. Postgraduate studies usually involve three years of subject-specific learning. The New Zealand Society of Physiotherapists Incorporated (NZSP) is a professional body that physiotherapists can optionally become members in New Zealand.

Pakistan

In Sri Lanka from the 2006 Allied University of Health sciences faculty and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colombo as well as in 2013 in general, Mr. John Kotelawala Defense University has started a four-year undergraduate program. 2011 is an extraordinary year in the field of Sri Lankan physiotherapy. Graduates of the first physiotherapy graduate are to graduate this year. They are from the University of Colombo and Peradeniya University. Currently BSc. the physiotherapy degree program has become one of the most favorite programs among Sri Lankan students. It takes more than 1.8 Z score marks to be selected for this course. Currently practicing PTs holds a bachelor's degree, and some still hold a diploma. Currently the education program for physical therapy in the world has changed because they consider the diploma holders only as assistant physiotherapy in most countries in the world. PT who hold diplomas in the PT are encouraged to obtain their degree from the University of Kelaniya, the Faculty of Medicine or the University of Colombo or the General Defense University of Sir John Kotelewala who commenced their lateral admission program from 2014. To build a profession in the country, physiotherapy graduates think the aim is that all PT is at the minimum bachelor level at least in 2020.

In Sri Lanka, Physiotherapy is available as a two-year Diploma program at the School of Physiotherapy & amp; Occupational Therapy, affiliated with the National Hospital of Colombo from 1957. They only had six months of classroom training and students were sent to the hospital for clinical practice.

There are only a few specialized PG Physiotherapists available in countries such as Geeth Kumara-MPT (MSS- Muskuloskeletal and sport), Esther Liyanage- MPT (MSS) Muskuloskeletal and sports, D.K.Aththony - MPT (CP - Community Physiotherapy)... etc.

Taiwan

In Taiwan, Physical Therapy is available as a four-year undergraduate program at 14 universities. There are also three junior colleges to provide a five-year program. Clinical practice is required in the last year of the two programs mentioned above. After a student graduated from the PT program, he was then asked to pass a national licensing exam administered by the Ministry of Exam, Taiwan, R.O.C. Many universities also offer postgraduate courses in physical therapy, rehabilitation, or related disciplines at the masters or doctoral level.

Europe

Italy

In Italy, known as "Laurea in Physiotherapy (abilitante alla professione sanitaria di Fisioterapista)", it is a three-year full-time degree taught at the Faculty of Medicine of many Universities in Italy. This course is an intensive mix of class time and compulsory internship since the first year. Internships are an important part that the number of hours dedicated to training is increasing to reach half of the program in the third year. There are no special requirements for admission to a Bachelor's degree; students from various backgrounds can access the program, previously passed the pre-selection test of 80 questions. This test is implemented into all courses known as "numero chiuso" or close access to limit the number of participants. Depending on the Faculty and courses between 30 to 400 positions are available each year. To be chosen someone not only pass the exam but finish in the top position needed to enter. For all degrees the para-medical Institutions may choose their own tests held simultaneously at all Universities, while for the Medicine the tests are administered by the Ministry of Education.

The importance given for the preliminary exam and the "close number" is paramount. This maneuver is meant to control the job market, thereby providing a safe job for those who are finished.

However between 2010 and 2011, public funds for national health care were cut drastically, resulting in widespread job losses and national inability for newly formed students to be employed, contemporary for the majority of the population in need of medical care but unable to pay for private services , which is set at minimum cost with imposition of the law, therefore does not allow part of the unemployed physiotherapist to lower their own costs so as to offer their services and provide the portion of the population with the necessary assistance.

Since 2009 physiotherapy has been a four-year career. Physiotherapists who have completed their 3-year training can also take another year.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, pre-enrollment programs and Physiotherapy degrees are offered by thirty-five universities. Three-year undergraduate degree program in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and four years in Scotland, while a pre-enrollment master's degree spread over two extended academic years. The difference in degree programs in Scotland compared to other parts of the UK reflects the nature of the country's education system and the content of all English degree programs is basically the same. All programs are approved by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the UK Health and Care Professions Council - the latter enabling enrollment and the right to use protected titles from Physiotherapist upon successful completion of the degree program. All physiotherapy degree programs comprise a mix of theoretical and practical teaching sessions and include mandatory 1000-hour clinical practice spread throughout each academic year. The pre-enrollment physiotherapy training consists of advanced studies in each of three different areas of English Physiotherapy practice - Musculoskeletal, Neurological and Cardio-respiratory Care. A typical entry requirement for a bachelor's degree program is GCE 'A' three academic levels (or equivalent) on grades between ABB - AAA depending on the institution of higher education. The graduate program requires a degree in relevant subjects (eg Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, etc.) with a minimum grade of the upper second grade award.

United States

In the United States, curricula for Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants are accredited by the Accreditation Commission in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). While 226 of 227 programs now offer Doctor of Physical Therapy, there are still many physical therapists currently trained in the US who are trained with a Bachelor of Science (BSPT) or Master of Physical Therapy. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, the number of DPT programs offered in the US increased from 19 of 212 accredited programs (along with 184 MSPT and 9 BSPT programs) in 2000, to 222 from 227 programs in 2011.

The doctoral program uses different teaching strategies to prepare students for direct access care. Strategies include, case-based studies, role playing, practice exams and computer-assisted learning.

Physical Assistant The therapist usually graduates with an Associate of Applied Science degree. As of August 2011, there are 276 two-year accredited programs for Physical Therapist Assistants in the United States.

Upon graduation of the accredited program, PT and PTA are required to pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) before they can obtain a license to practice. Each country organizes licensed physical therapy independently, so the exact requirements for licensing and renewal vary from state to state.

Physical Therapist Education includes clinical apprenticeships that usually occur towards the end of a professional degree. Clinical internships allow students to combine their critical thinking skills, hands-on practice, and professional behavior into actual clinical scenarios. During this time, the apprentice doctor will rotate between different settings for a certain period of time of a month or more. For example, an apprentice doctor may have a rotation in orthopedics for a month and then in the next month's wound care. This will continue in different settings for a predetermined amount of time, which is usually about a year. Throughout this rotation students are paired with a clinical instructor. The role of clinical instructors is to supervise students as they apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. To be a clinical instructor, one must be a Physical Therapy Practice for at least a year. After graduating from an accredited program and becoming licensed, a Physical Therapy Doctor can continue his education by including residency and then fellowship. Residency and scholarships are not required today, but are becoming more common in physical therapy education. There are currently 162 residencies and scholarships in the United States.

Residency

A residency is usually done after students complete a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and pass the initial licensing exam. Residency continues physical therapy education with evidence-based training to better equip residents to be able to help the patients they will serve. Residency is a specialization designed to advance the knowledge of the population in the evaluation, examination, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and patient management in a subset of patients provided. Residency for a Physical Therapy Doctor is between 9 and 36 months and must be completed within a minimum of 1,500 hours. Residency may involve community services, research, patient education, teaching opportunities, and supervision of other health care providers. Residency is currently offered in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Clinical Electrophysiology, Geriatrics, Neurology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Sports, Women's Health, and Wound Care. Residency prepares Doctors to be certified clinical specialists through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS).

Fellowship

The Guild is designed to provide greater evidence-based knowledge in a specialization or subspecialty. To gain acceptance to the fellowship a physical therapist must have one or more of the following qualifications 1) Settlement of residency 2) Certification Specialist Certification Board 3) Demonstrate clinical skills in a particular specialized field. Fellowship must be completed between 6 and 36 months and completed with a minimum of 1000 hours. Scholarships are offered in Hand Therapy, Motion Science, Neonatal, Orthopedic Manual of Physical Therapy, and Sports-Division 1 Athletics. People who complete post-doctoral residencies and scholarships are more valuable as special practitioners.
