Histori
NFIB was founded by C. Wilson Harder in 1943 and retained its headquarters in San Mateo, California, until 1992 when relocated to Nashville, TN. Harder starts with the home office and sells the first membership to his neighbor. His vision is to provide small business and independent voice in government decision making through political advocacy. Since its early history, the NFIB's political agenda has been determined through a one-vote vote process from its membership.
Harder succeeded in 1969 by his son John, who was replaced only six months later by Wilson S. Johnson. Under Johnson, the Board of Action members are made, which still exists today, known as the Leadership Council. During this time, NFIB also began to gain greater recognition in Washington, D.C., and in the nation's capital.
John Sloan became President of NFIB in 1983. He was the first chief executive to be brought in from outside the organization. Sloan installs a business structure with a sales, financial and administrative manager directed by the CFO (both in San Mateo), and expands the organization's presence with public policy operations in Washington, DC.
In 1983, the organization established the NFIB Member Services Corporation. The corporation is wholly owned by NFIB. The goal is to offer beneficiary benefit program members to assist members in reducing operating costs. Programs include workers' compensation insurance, commercial and personal health insurance, credit card processing, operating inventory, and discounts on commonly used business products and services.
In 1992, following the death of John Sloan, Jack Faris assumed the role of the President and clearly defined the role of NFIB in influencing public policy at the state and federal level through political and grassroots activism, and lobbying with legislators in an integrated manner. In 1992, NFIB's headquarters was officially moved to Nashville, TN.
Jack Faris announced his resignation in early 2005. The council established a search committee and selected Todd A. Stottlemyer as the fifth President of NFIB. Stottlemyer took control of NFIB on 15 February 2006, with the aim of increasing non-partisan reach and NFIB technology infrastructure.
In February 2009, Dan Danner became the sixth president of the NFIB and served until February 2016. Under Danner's leadership, NFIB proved to be a driving force in opposing major government regulations; in 2012 it gained historical recognition as the only business association to challenge President Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, as a party in the case of the Supreme Court of the Independent Business National Federation v. Sebelius .
After Danner's retirement, Juanita Duggan was appointed President and CEO in February 2016. Duggan has taken the lead in establishing the NFIB as the definitive source of information about the Supreme Court candidate, in connection with their stance on business matters. Recognize that the judges have long-lasting impacts can have a business environment for independent business.
NFIB has grown from the vision of Harder's profit-oriented entrepreneur in 1943 to a national nonprofit association of more than 325,000 members as it is today.

Politics
On its website, the National Federation of Independent Business states that it is a "non-profit, non-partisan organization established in 1943" and "represents the consensus view of its members in Washington and all 50 state capitals." The PAC is called Save America's Free Enterprise Trust (SAFE).
In 2010, 25 of its members, all Republicans, were elected to the 112th Congress. A number of them, such as Rand Paul, Jeff Duncan, Paul Gosar and Kristi Noem, are affiliated with or supported by the Tea Party movement.
Also in 2010, NFIB became the main plaintiff against the Patient Reform Act of Patient health and Affordable Protection. The organization joins 26 states in a lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of the law. The case was taken by the Supreme Court, which issued its verdict on the Independent National Business Federation v. Sebelius on June 28, 2012, uphold most of the provisions of the law. Karl Rove's conservative Crossroads GPS PAC gave NFIB $ 3.7 million to help fund the court battle. Meanwhile, many other small business supporters support PPACA.
NFIB supports the 2014 Small Business Tax Assistance Act (HR 4457; 113th Congress), a bill that will amend article 179 of the Internal Revenue Code, which largely affects small to medium-sized businesses, retroactively and permanently from 1 January 2014 , an increase in restrictions on the amount of investments that can be immediately withheld from taxable income. The bill will return the tax code to 2013 status and make a permanent change. And Danner, president and CEO at the time, argued that Congress could help small businesses by issuing the bill because it would allow small businesses to "plan for the future, invest in the economy and hire new workers."
IN 2017, NFIB supports SCOTUS nominations confirmation Neil Gorsuch.
