" Better Than Life " is the second episode of the Red Dwarf series, and the eighth in the series runs. It was first aired on BBC2 on September 13, 1988. Written by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, and directed by Ed Bye, the episode introduces the total immersion video game "Better Than Life", featuring both the first and the second Red Dwarf novel.

Plot
The post pod arrives 3 million years late, which, according to Holly's observations, is the average for a second-grade letter. Among the usual bills and junk mail is the total immersion video game "Better Than Life". Rimmer received a large tax bill from the Outland Revenue, along with a letter from his mother informing him that his father had died. Though he knew his father (and in fact, everyone he knew on Earth) had long since died, seeing the news in writing interrupted him, mentioned that he was looking at him. However, he states that he hates him, because of the strict requirements for his children to enter space to make up for his failure to get the corps. (Rimmer eventually frees himself at the age of 14).
To cheer her up, Lister and Cats invite Rimmer to play "Better Than Life", where everyone's deepest desire comes true. Everything went well; The cat has two girlfriends, Marilyn Monroe and mermaid (upper half fish, woman half bottom). Lister is rich enough to eat cedared vindaloo and play golf. Rimmer, who has a physical form in the game, leads the life of an admiral with drinks and parties while Lister enjoys playing golf around the luxury golf course. Rimmer met his father, who said he was a "total smeghead". Rimmer is very confused by this because he always hopes to honor his father, but Cat bells come in and says that it is part of his imagination and stole Rimmer's cigar. In spite of this knowledge, the event generated Rimmer's inability, and his neurotic mind, unconsciously unable to accept the good things happened to him, rebelled against him, and he quickly became unable to control his negative imagination.
She soon ends up again as a hologram, with a wife (Yvonne McGruder, previously in the game, having a relationship with her), seven children (pregnant leads lead to pregnancy), unsympathetic (demanding 18,000 threatening to break his legs and thumbs). This continues until others find themselves caught in their nightmares, buried to their necks in the sand, smeared with jam and the ants are about to eat. The game is over, which comes as a great help to everyone. When they summon Rimmer for his "chaotic brain," Rimmer gets a letter informing him that he passed the astro-navigation test and will be promoted, causing Rimmer to believe his life is spinning. When they returned to their residence, the tax collectors emerged from the lockers, causing the crew to realize that the game was not over. He then starts to break Rimmer's thumb.

Production
After looking back on the first series, the authors, Grant and Naylor, realized that they needed to expand Rimmer's background and explore his character. To achieve this Rimmer's family was written into the episode. There were three high-flying brothers, his distant mother and his psychotic father. Her father appeared in the "Better Than Life" scenario, played by John Abineri.
For the first time since the series began, filming of several scenes took place on the scene. To film the "Better Than Life" scenario, the crew went to locations including the beach scene at Rhyl and Sacha's Hotel in Manchester. The same hotel will then hold a science fiction convention for Star Trek, Space: 1999 and Doctor Who. . The beach beach location causes headaches because it looks dull and cold. One scene proved so problematic - when they were meant to sunbathe on a "paradise-like" beach, Craig Charles and Danny John-Jules could not stop shivering - that the scenes were rewritten and re-recorded as on the golf course. Even the view of the golf course looked boring and cold, but director Ed Bye assured the crew that it was okay and that sunlight could be included during editing. However, it can not be made to look bright and it is not until the episode is remastered that the sun's rays are finally visible.
Another "Better Than Life" appearance was made by Ron Pember, who played Taxman, Debbie Ash as Marilyn Monroe and Judy Hawkins as Yvonne McGruder. Tony Hawks, who appeared on the episode of "Red Dwarf I " Future Echoes ". return to the series to play the game guide 'Better Than Life'. Gordon Salkilld emerged as Gordon's computer, a chess game chess player from Holly.
Reception
Originally broadcast on the BBC2 English channel on September 13, 1988 at 9:00 pm night slot, the episode gained average display ratings. This episode may not occupy the favorites list of many fans, but the story turned out to be very influential. Grant and Naylor used the plot for their first and second novels - Infinity Welcomes Careful Driver ended up on the cliffhanger when the crew entered the game and the majority of the second novel, Better Than Life followed from there.
