Venus Williams and Serena Williams (born June 17, 1980 and Sept. 26, 1981 respectively) are professional tennis players and sisters who have faced 29 times in professional tournaments, last in the 2018 Indian Wells Masters 1000 event. Serena leads head-to-head 17-12.

Both sisters of Williams have been ranked No. World. 1: Venus with a total of 11 weeks, starting in February 2002; Serena for a total of 316 weeks, starting in July 2002.

The Williams sisters were the only two women during the open era to play each other in four consecutive Grand Slam rounds: from the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open. Serena won all four of these finals.

Venus has won 49 singles titles during his career, and Serena has won 72.

Both sisters personally remained very close. They have won 22 titles while playing doubles together, including 14 Grand Slam titles and 3 Olympic gold medals.

History

1998-2000

Serena and Venus Williams played their first professional game against each other in the second round of Open Australia 1998. Venus won 7-6 (4), 6-1. The game was described as "substandard". They play again in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open, the first claycourt tournament of Serena's career, which Venus won 6-4, 6-2. Together they won two double titles.

Their next match was almost a year later in the final of the 1999 Lipton International Football Championship in Key Biscayne, Florida. Serena came from his first two tournament titles, but Venus won the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. The match was the first single final between the sisters on a WTA tour and described by their father as "bullfighting". Serena won her first professional singles match against Venus later that year in the Grand Slam Cup final. Serena came from her first Grand Slam championship at the US Open and defeated her sister, and the defending champions, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Venus is the only top player to date that Serena has yet to lose. Together, they won three double titles, two of them being majors; French Open & amp; US Open.

Entering the next game in the Wimbledon semi-final in 2000 (their first match against each other on the grass), Serena is a favorite. However, the victory went to Venus 6-2, 7-6 (3), who will continue to win the Wimbledon trophy for his first Grand Slam singles title. They work together to win the Wimbledon doubles title and then the Olympic gold medal. Venus career excellence is now at 4-1.

2001

They started the year by winning the Australian Open doubles title.

In the spring at the Tennis Masters Series in Indian Wells, California, amid the Venus controversy resigned before their scheduled semi-final match against Serena. The Williams family is accused of match-fixing, but the allegations are dismissed by most, including Andre Agassi who calls him "ridiculous". Serena won the final against Kim Clijsters in the middle of the boos, during the game and the next trophy presentation.

The only match between the Williams brothers during 2001 occurred in the US Open final, where they had never met but where both had previously won a single title. This is the first final involving the sisters in the Grand Slam tournament during the open era and the first since the Watson brothers played in the Wimbledon final in 1884. The game has been described as "the most anticipated tennis final for many years". However, the nerves seem to have played a factor in the match, which was won easily by Venus 6-2, 6-4. Renowned journalist Peter Bodo said that the first Grand Slam final played between the Williams brothers was "a very bad match,... though it was a great performance from the winner." With that win, Venus now leads their 5-1 rivalry and in a 4-1 Grand Slam title.

2002

Venus and Serena will play each other four times in 2002. In addition to being the most frequent they meet in a year, this will also mark the first time Serena ended the season with a leading head-to-head, 4 -0.

Their first meeting of the year took place in the semi-finals at the NASDAQ-100 Open. Serena won the match 6-2, 6-2, just a second victory over her sister in her career and the first since 1999. The loss of Venus was described as "sluggish" and ended her 22-game streak in a row and three consecutive titles at the event.

Their next meeting is the second in the Grand Slam final, and the second on clay. At Roland Garros Serena beat Venus in a "tight" game 7-5, 6-3. The Grand Slam was the first for Serena in three years, and it was the first French Open final ever played by the Sisters. By reaching the final, Venus and Serena convince themselves to rise to the first and second rankings in the world rankings.

A month later, the Williams brothers meet again in the Grand Slam final, at Wimbledon. Again, Serena was a 7-6 (4), 6-3 winner and the victory moved Serena past her sister to the top of the rankings. Venus still leads 5-4 in head-to-head and 4-3 at Grand Slam, but now Serena is seen as a player "now sets the agenda for women's tennis". They won the doubles together.

Their fourth and final match of the year took place in the final at the US Open, in a match where the winner will not only take the trophy but also the No.1 ranking. Serena won the game 6-4, 6-3 with a "blister" tennis display.

2003

2003 will be the year of injury and loss for Venus and Serena Williams, with two highlights being the final of the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

The first match of 2003 to be contested between the Williams brothers was the first final match between two players at the Australian Open but the fourth in a row in the majors. Serena won the match 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4, the most exciting game between them since 1999. The victory completes what has been known as "Serena Slam"; Serena Williams became the first player since Steffi Graf held the four Grand Slams at the same time. In addition Venus Williams became the first player since Martina Hingis in 1997 to make four Grand Slam finals in a row, and the sisters together became the first players in the open era to contest four finals in a row in the majors. Together they won the doubles title.

This consistent game in Grand Slam recently made some people comment that Williams's sister has a grip on women's tennis.

The Williams sisters next met in the 2003 Wimbledon final, the repeat of the 2002 finals in the same tournament. Once again the match was near but Serena, aided by a stomach injury that negatively impacted the pace of Venus, won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. The win was the second in a row at Wimbledon for Serena and the fifth of the last six. In addition, Williams's sister collectively now has won four last Wimbledon titles and seven of the last nine Grand Slams. Serena Williams now won the last six consecutive meetings, and led a head-to-head 7-5.

The Wimbledon final is the last Grand Slam final contested between the two for five years. The brothers will be thrown off the tour through injury, and then have to compete with the death of Yetunde Price, their half sister.

2004-2005

Venus and Serena Williams did not meet in a professional tennis match during 2004, a year that did not see a younger sister win the Grand Slam for the first time since 1998. 2005 will return to Grand Slam victory for Williams's two sisters but in perhaps a sign of increasing competition no one of their championships were decided upon each other.

Their first match of 2005 was in the NASDAQ-100 Open quarter-finals, their third career encounter at the tournament. The match was won by Venus Williams 6-1, 7-6 (8); it was the first encounter beyond the final between the two in three years and was the first victory by Williams's older sister in four years.

The sisters next meet in one of the biggest tennis stages in tennis, the US Open, although much earlier in the tournament than they usually do. Venus, as Wimbledon champion recently and after three "remarkable efforts" to reach this round may be liked head-to-head Williams for the first time in years. In the fourth round (their initial meeting at the Grand Slam since their first at the 1998 Australian Open) Venus Williams won 7-6 (5), 6-2. Venus will lose in the quarterfinals 4-6 7-5 6-1 to eventual champion Kim Clijsters, the first time since the 1998 Rome meeting that the winner of the Williams match has not won the title.

At the close of the year, after the first year since 2000 in which Serena was unable to win a game against her sister, Venus Williams now has head-to-head ties 7-7.

2008-2009

The first meeting in 2008 between the sisters took place at the Canara Bank Bangalore Open, their first meeting in the Tier II event. The only match between the two brothers ended with a third set tiebreak, both Venus and Serena, according to commentator and former Tracy Austin player "cripple the gut to win". The match ended in a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) win for Serena.

Venus and Serena next meet on a familiar stage, Wimbledon; The match was their fourth meeting on the grass and their third final. The match featured "big blows and great service" and "some extraordinary protection and court protection". Testimony of the fact that this is arguably Williams's best sister to date, former player and commentator John McEnroe has called the "classic border" game. Venus won the game 7-5, 6-4. They work together to win the double title and then the second Olympic Gold Medal together.

In the US Open, fourth seed Serena beat seventh seed Venus in the quarterfinals 7-6 (6), 7-6 (7) and eventually won the tournament. Tennis magazine proclaims the best women's game of 2008. This year's final match between sisters Williams is during the round robin phase at the Sony Ericsson Championship end of the year, with Venus winning 5-7, 6-1, 6-0. This is the first set 6-0 in their match.

At the end of 2008, their head-to-head career record was tied 9-9.

Williams's first match of 2009 was at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, where they met in the semi-finals. In a match described as a "thriller" by CNN, Venus won 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (3). Serena suffered a knee injury in the third set, but did not forgive herself for this, and Venus said that the match was eligible for the final. Simon Reed, writing for Eurosport, said that the competition has become "bigger now than ever" in the previous three or four games, due to the increased emotional intensity that the game appears to raise the players he believes. have been lacking in the early part of their careers. Venus and Serena next play in the semifinals of Sony Ericsson Open in April. Serena won the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, while securing World No. ranking. 1, and tied their head-to-head record with ten wins each. Both reached the final of the 2009 Wimbledon Championships for singles and doubles. Serena won the singles title for the first time in six years, beating Venus 7-6 (3), 6-2. They met for the fourth time this year during the round robin phase at the end of the 2009 Sony Ericsson Championships, with Serena winning 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4) saving match points. They meet again in the final of the tournament with Serena winning again with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (4). Head-to-head now stands at 13-10 to support Serena, who also won the last four meetings.

2013-2015

Due to a mixture of injuries and illness, the couple are not facing each other again until 2013 Family Circle Cup. This is their first clay match since the French Open final of 2002. Serena won their fifth consecutive game against Venus. The 25th meeting of Venus and Serena takes place in the 2014 Rogers Cup semi-final. Serena competes with five consecutive wins in a row against his sister. However, Venus won the match 6 (2) -7, 6-2, 6-3, making the sister's head a record head on 14-11 in favor of Serena. Venus boosted the Premier Mandatory/Premier 5 Premier record against Serena to 5-2 and his semifinal record against his sister to 3-4.

After a period of six years, the couple met in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2015 - their first encounter in a grand slam event since Wimbledon 2009. This is the sixth meeting of the pair at Wimbledon. Serena won the match with a score of 6-4, 6-3, making the sister's head to head 15-11 record in favor of Serena and 4-2 at Wimbledon again in favor of Serena. They meet again in the US Open quarter-finals, where Serena wins, taking a head to head for 16-11 to his advantage.

2017

The sisters renewed their grand slam competition in the Australian Open final. Serena won her seventh Australian Open title, and her 23rd overall Grand Slam title, beating Venus 6-4, 6-4. The victory also allows Serena to pass 22 grand slam titles Steffi Graf.

Analysis

This section analyzes the competition in terms of their professional and personal relationships, how their career and their intertwined competition have affected their heritage, and the overall cultural impact of the competition.

Competitive relationship and dynamics

The professional and dynamic relationship between Venus and Serena Williams is strongly influenced by close personal relationships. The notion of two top professionals emerging from the same family to compete with each other has never happened before, and is a scenario that has been described as "impossible as a set of parents raising Picasso and Monet." After Serena's big win over the Venus finals only at the 2003 Australian Open and the 2002 French Open, reporters said "Obviously Venus has a sister complex to Serena." Peter Bodo, who talks more about the dislike of siblings who fought in the Grand Slam final, declared "This is an ordinary occurrence that will cease to be possible, perhaps once again, as they get rid of a stick."

Legacy

All Williams finals in the 2001 US Open attracted a larger television audience than the Notre Dame-Nebraska college football game that was broadcasted at the same time. In fact, part of the reason why the women's final in the US Open moved to "prime time" is due to the positive effect that the Williams sisters have on television ratings. The four highest US Open Princess finalists of CBS over the past decade have all involved sister Williams.

Williams's legacy is also arguably seen in the improvement of African-American representation among professionals of tennis and new players, although their representation among professionals remains small. One third of all new grassroots players are African American or Hispanic, a fact in which USTA president Jane Brown Grimes says, "I can not help but think that Venus and Serena are the drivers behind it".
