RfC in Scientific Opinion on Climate Change

Comment on Talk: Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change # RFC_Controversy_about_the_policy_section where the topic is being debated but there are currently some contributors. The RfC was raised by Serten who entered a previous request here. He marks the RfC that appeals to Politics, government, and RfC lists of laws but not lists of Mathematics, science, and RfC technology, and refers as you see in the above comment to those interested in science as a tekkis that may give the idea of a lack of mind meetings there. Comment on WikiProject X proposal

Hello! As you know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia are struggling to stay active once they are established. I believe there are many potential WikiProjects to facilitate cross-field collaboration, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will learn what makes WikiProjects successfully defend the editor and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the previous posting error If someone has moved my message to the talk page, feel free to delete this post.) Harej (talk) 22:48, October 1, 2014 (UTC)

Sociology: student data spotlight

Piotr reminded me that I did not share this here; here's a link to the article we wrote for the ASA Footnotes publication about the great impact of their Wikipedia Initiative so far with the sociology content in WP.

Highlights:

  • We have 34 sociology classes participating in our program, and the students in that class edited 967 unique articles. All sociology students say they have contributed 8.76 million bytes of content to Wikipedia.
  • We do quality article research in spring 2012, which finds that students increase Wikipedia on average by 88 percent.

You can see more at: http://www.asanet.org/footnotes/septoct14/wikipedia_0914.html#sthash.Jt81C5ie.duf

We have two more articles coming out in the Future Footage, one from the professors talking about their experience and one on how to join the initiative.

Article Editing Sociology: A guide for students and instructors

Hello! I am a new Associate of Communication for Wiki Education Foundation. We are in the process of developing an initial draft of an advisory brochure for instructors and students on Sociology articles on Wikipedia, and how to contribute and improve them effectively. We've done this before for psychology - you can see the results of that effort here.

I look forward to hearing from regular contributors to articles related to sociology. What would you tell a new student, or Wikipedian, to help them start editing sociology topics? Any suggestions on editing in this field are welcome, especially with regard to specific sociological issues, such as finding a good candidate article for improvement, what is a good (and bad) source, and what kind of topic heading should be avoided. Any other topic or idea is accepted.

I will post a draft for review once we have an idea of the shape needed - for now, I am gathering feedback and ideas from the community to guide it. Feel free to contact me here or on my talk page!

Eryk (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:47, October 17, 2014 (UTC)

@Eryk (Ed Wiki): : This is a great initiative. You may want to see what you can take from my long (too long...) introductory page such as Wikipedia: School and university/User: Piotrus/Fall 2011 project, tailored for sociology students. Important Introduction, Duties and Tips may be of interest to you. And inviting them to see WikiProject is a good idea too. - Piotr Konieczny aka Proconsul Piotrus | reply here 05:31, October 23, 2014 (UTC)

I have seen the advice offered by Piotrus and have worked on several aspects of the current design. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to read the draft here. We look forward to feedback from the community. Ideally, we will collect suggestions and make revisions on December 1st. Thank you to all of you! Bantuan dengan dua artikel?

I will post this on some applicable WikiProjects, so my apologies for cut and paste. I do not really see the purpose in writing a new one for every WP. In any case, I need help refining the article for Gender Ads, a book by Goffman. Long story short, this article was made by a group of students who were sent here with apparently no instruction or education about Wikipedia and wrote an encyclopedia article, so the page has standard problems: original research, bad sources, tone. I've done enough to show where the book will be famous, but the page needs to be refined to focus on the book's influence on others and the basic outline. I'm not too familiar with this job, so it would be better for someone familiar with the job to edit the page. I think students might see basic articles for gender ads, who have similar issues (but better sources), and imitate their pages afterwards and after the outline of the student paper type. Both articles can use some of the work of intelligent editors, if one is ready for the challenge. I have cleaned up the worst in the book article and threw some sources into, so that's what happened to it. Tokyogirl79 (?????) 01:00, December 12, 2014 (UTC)

Writing new articles about illegal immigrants: feedback received

My name is Katherine and I am currently a senior who attends Rice University. I intend to write a new Wikipedia page titled "The availability of health services for illegal immigrants," which I think this page will serve as a great parent article. In this new article I intend to include four main sections as follows: introduction/background, use of health care services, barriers to accessing health care systems, and relevant federal and state level policies. Under each of these main sections, except for the introduction, there will also be at least one sub-section associated with a particular population, such as women or specific data found on the topic. This proposed donation is also part of the course I take for my children on poverty, justice, and human ability. Feel free to offer thoughts, suggestions, and suggestions! Workplace harassment

I plan to move the Workplace harassment page to the "Harassment in the Workplace in the United States" page, as the current page focuses only on the United States and I also plan to contribute content that is specific to the US. If you have any other suggestions on how I can move the article better, please let me know.

In addition to moving articles, I plan to remove some sections, such as "Responsibility" and "Productivity", and add new sections, such as "Definition", "Victim", "Impact", and "Prevention". I'm sure such changes on the page will make navigating the page easier and allowing content to be more specific. Also, I plan to expand significantly the reference section with more scientific sources.

I would appreciate any help with the article. I'm also open to suggestions, so please let me know if there's anything I can do better. Thank you!

Lindaticket (talk) 14:52, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

@Lindaticket: Looking at this article, I think you do not need to move it, it's pretty generic. You may have to write harassment at work in the United States from scratch. See also Harassment in the UK for layouts that are so similar to related topics. - Piotr Konieczny aka Proconsul Piotrus | reply here 03:56, March 3, 2015 (UTC)
@Piotrus: : Hi, Piotrus. Lindaticket also left a note on the Talk: Harassment in the workplace and the response was that it would be better to leave the matter in the article than to start a subartikel. I think as long as the material in the current article is left in place (it was pretty generic, as you say), up Lindaticket which he prefers to do - start a new article or expanding old ones. FYI, I support the registered Lindaticket course. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 15:48, March 11, 2015 (UTC)

Reissue: Pandering

In an article for Pandering, this phrase, "An example of a pandering is Hillary Clinton's statement that marriage is a bond between a man and a woman in 2004. While in 2015, Hillary Clinton adopted a position of supporting gay marriage to gain support in the political landscape. [2] ", I believe is a reflection of the perception of the author of Clinton's actions. The author considers Clinton's act as Pandering as fact, but in this context I do not accept the author's example for Pandering as valid. That this is also part of Sociology, humans really educate themselves, gain enlightenment, and have a change of heart throughout their lives on various social or political issues (I personally are examples). Therefore, I believe the Pandering author's example should be deleted or altered because this is more of an example of political bias than the fact of Pandering. Maybe using a hypothetical candidate would be best. Full disclosure... I am not a supporter of Hillary Clinton.Wallee27 (talk) 16:16, February 1, 2016 (UTC)

Anti-psychiatry

I clicked and found myself in the Anti-psychiatry page and... it was a mess. I do not know anything about antipsychiatry, but the blatant character attack and POV impulse like a big red flag, so I start checking the source and nothing I've checked so far has to do with antipsychiatry. I got the sense from the discussion that there is a lot of bad information that supports the idea of psychiatry coming from Scientology. Their beliefs do have a place in the article... but with the right source and NPOV. There are other POV's being pushed as well. It turned out to be a very controversial topic. Now after I read a bit about it, it's actually quite interesting. But cleaning the article will be a lot to overcome... so I post this on wikiprojects that are relevant to the expectations of others may also be interested and want to help. :) I have already started a discussion about it in Talk: Anti-psychiatry/Archive 8 # Source. Thank you! Permstrump (talk) 19:23, February 19, 2016 (UTC)

I believe it is marked for WP: SOCIOLOGY because "antipsychiatry" refers to a motion, more or less. Permstrump (talk) 19:23, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Page Talk for Change Theory?

First I apologize if this is not the right place for this discussion (I'm not a frequent editor on Wikipedia).

I came to Theory of Change page, which is part of Project Sociology, and needs attention. While this topic is in my academic field of study, I do not want to make changes without a page of talks first. However, nothing seems to set - and I'm not sure to do that. Can someone help?

There are three concerns I have on the page: (1) it reads like a given pseudo-advertorial basically referencing one primary source. (2) is not written from a neutral point of view because it is very positive of the method, and does not present alternative ideas (and Theory of Change is not perfect) and (3) at least one reference [# 14] is not even related to the content as shown. It looks like very random inclusion for any reason.

If someone can help organize the talk page, I'm happy to help improve the page. Mari370 (talk) 17:11, March 28, 2016 (UTC)

I added a talk page tag that provides a link to start a new topic on the The Change conversation page. I also suggest proposing page redirects to change the title of the article into something more descriptive like "Theory of social change" or "Theory of change (sociology)." Globalization category

Due to the inter- and multi-disciplinary nature inherent in the topic of Globalization, there are many intersections with the corresponding WikiProject categories. Currently, comments will be welcomed with the proposed name Category: Sociocultural globalization (main aspects and level 2 of the Globalization category) on Wikipedia: Category_for_discussion/Log/2016_May_28 # Category: Sosiocultural_globalization. Help with articles?

I will post this in several different areas, but I wonder if anyone can help with the draft: Rape concept. I think this can be independently stand out outside the culture of rape, but the draft takes a lot of work and it will have a better chance of holding back surveillance (because let's face it, it gets a lot of checks once it's accepted) if we have multiple editors who do it. Anyone interested? Tokyogirl79 (?????) 05:45, June 14, 2016 (UTC)

Find feedback about tools in the Visual Editor to add open license text from other sources

Hello, all

I'm designing a tool for Visual Editor to make it easier for people to add open license text from other sources, there are a large number of open source licenses compatible with Wikipedia including about 9000 journals. I can see enormous opportunities to easily create high quality articles with high volume quickly. I have done a small project with open license text from UNESCO as proof of concept, any thoughts, feedback or support (on Meta page) will be highly appreciated.

thank you

Racism in South Korea

Hello, I hope I can contact someone here to see more about Racism articles in South Korea.

There is a dispute about the use of webblog and notation of an event. More on Talk: Racism in South Korea # Weblog Reliability and you can see also some small notes in "history". It would be better to get more opinions because this article is mainly protected by one user. The problem is there is a bar owner in Seoul who keeps a record in his bar that because of Ebola, he will not let the blacks. She apologized four days later, saying, it was because of her poor English skills and the beer. I find this event very insignificant for an article like this. It's as famous as local murder. Perhaps a poor comparison, but still, should not be in this article. And maybe you can also give your opinion about the use of webblog. thanks. --Christian140 (talk) 08:11, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

PS: Actually, I have more problems with articles that have absolutely no scientific approach. This article basically builds news reports. However, I think news reports are only valid for articles on current events, video games, movies and people. However, articles on racism and discrimination must follow sociological research. In addition, unlike the United States, which has been a fusion since its inception, South Korea is a homogeneous nation. So, research seems to be new in the early stages too, making knowledge based on even more invalid news papers, I think. In addition, I think when the article was named "racism in South Korea" it must follow the definition of Racism. In fact, if the wikipedia author does not evaluate the event on its own, it is original research . However, the article also has a section on Discrimination against North Korean defectors. In my opinion, racism and discrimination are not the same. Therefore, some may claim that this section is not included in the article.

Doing an article like "racism in South Korea" is a lot of effort. Basically because it's not a textbook topic like let's say Product Innovation Charter, where you can find the basic theoretical introduction in the book and get very specific literature from the database. So my approach to starting an article like this is to find an international ranking/index that follows a scientific approach to get country comparison. Instead someone can search the literature review to get art status and find some more articles about databases like Google Scholar or ScienceDirect. I can not see how the source article can provide information about such a thing, in terms of South Korea, and certain research areas. --Christian140 (talk) 08:11, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

@ Christian140: You are mostly right. The article is in bad shape, full of anecdotal examples based on low-quality sources (blogs). Now, news can sometimes be used to fill such articles, so I would not say all the news sources should be deleted, but such articles should be based on academic sources first (and it does exist). To be honest, this article - given its sensitive topic - is not far from the WP candidate: TNT, as it appears to be written almost like harsh words, in a journalistic-like style, much more encyclopaedic. Stories about bars ([2]) can be saved, but not as pictures/captions are placed weird. I think the quotes from the ambassador are relevant, and can be reported in the article, but the trivial case of the bar itself is not really worth mentioning, except in the context of quoting the ambassador who commented on racism in Korea. PS. Regarding searching for sources, I also recommend using Google Books. PPS. I see you nominate it for AfD on Wikipedia: Articles for abolition/racism in South Korea and I choose to stay. Well, after looking into it again I think that the article can be saved, but half if not more than the content may have to go. Unfortunately, I do not have time to dissect it now. - Piotr Konieczny aka Proconsul Piotrus | reply here 08:53, August 22, 2016 (UTC)
@Piotrus: Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately I also do not have time to import the article. But at least the most "silly" information should go and it is also a matter that Spacecowboy "protects" the article, making constructive improvements almost impossible. Users also have a very questionable editing history. Unfortunately, the article was not on the watch list of many other users. The ambassador's opinion may be relevant, but I will not mention the bar more than likely like: "The Kenyan ambassador took a position in an incident at a bar in Itaewon on the topic of racism in Korea He stated that the problem of racism is very deep.". I mean, the focus should clearly lie in the ambassador while the bar show is not important but just "trigger" a statement. Consider there are ten thousand bars in Seoul and the owners make a mark not to let black people due to Ebola and remove them an hour later, apologize and say it because of bad English. The owner is not even a public figure. --Christian140 (talk) 09:17, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

Literature

Discussion is underway with a long analysis of the Piotrus Proconsulue here: Talk: Racism_in_South_Korea # Problems_with_citations . Furthermore, I propose to place {{TNT}} in the head of the article. I do not have time and will not edit wikipedia further English. Spacecowboy420 constantly represses and accuses me of being offended by disagreeable opinions. Although, every editing and change I make in the article, I justify the length on the summary and on the talk page, but it is immediately returned by the user. If another user made the same change, he did not return it. Although my proposal is supported by other users, he does not accept it. He seems to have a personal problem with me because I have less edits than he does on enWP. Well, English wikipedia is not a wiki in my home and I just want to raise awareness for articles that are biased, not well-sourced. Unfortunately, it did not work. I will leave the literature collected by Piotrus and I expand it, here.

The next quote problem, for reference only

Also, of course there are more citation issues with that article. In the "work discrimination" section, he states "even with Irish expatriates suffering some discrimination, with South Koreans viewing them as stereotypes as drunks." This is not in the content of the quote [3], nor on the second page. However, with googling you can find something in the east [4]. However, this is a single incident, so you can not conclude that "South Koreans see them stereotypically".

In addition, he stated "Many employers in South Korea often request photos as part of a job application, to facilitate the employers' process of engaging in racist discrimination." This sounds like the reason for photo apps is to differentiate other races. However, their reason comes from history of course. Application procedures vary from country to country, and in some places, ordinary photographs and in other countries do not. However, there is a risk that photos make disseminating applications easier. The statement is biased.

In the "Marriage and relationship" section. "International partners are often forced to leave South Korea because most South Koreans are strongly opposed to relations between South Korea and foreigners." The source can only be found after the following sentence. It's about a soccer player, who left Korea with his wife. [5] There is no general statement, still, here on wikipedia it is described as if this is a often case.

One might also note the conditions in which the article was made, with the lead author stating: "It is disappointing that the article is so small, given the vast nature of racism in South Korea, I will try to expand this article a little." It is also very dangerous for the neutrality of an article, writing with a biased opinion.

Starting from the beginning seems reasonable. --Christian140 (talk)
