Histori

In 1936, in response to the rapid growth of the Birmingham metropolitan area and the need of residents to have access to university education, the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa established the Birmingham Extension Center . The center operates in an old house in downtown Birmingham at 2131 6th Avenue North and enrolls 116 students. In 1945, a newly established four-year UA Medical School moved from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham and took over the management of Jefferson and Hillman hospitals. In 1957 registration at the extension center reached 1,856. In 1959, research grants, training grants, and scholarships exceeded $ 1,000,000, and land was damaged for the new Children's Hospital.

In the 1960s, it became clear that the counseling center became a university in its own right. An engineering building was built close to the medical center in 1962, and in November 1966, the Counseling Center and School of Medicine were incorporated into University of Alabama in Birmingham , with Dr. Joseph Volker as "Vice President for Birmingham Affairs" - read that it is still treated as an offsite department of the main campus in Tuscaloosa. The Advisory Board for UAB was created in 1967. In 1969, the legislature created the Alabama University System. UAB became one of three four-year institutions in the new system, which also includes UA and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) in Huntsville. Volker became UAB's first president.

In the 1970s, the university began a period of rapid growth. Registrations at the beginning of the decade reached 6,629, including 2,724 women. To accommodate student population growth, UAB acquires land in Southside. UAB Mini Park (the predecessor of The UAB Green) was dedicated in 1977.

The university created an inter-group athletic program, joined the NCAA and began to deploy a team that started with golf in 1970 and a men's basketball in 1978. The university's name was changed to University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1984, "In" to "at."

In 1990, UAB has received the 50,000th title. In 1992, AS. News and World Report is named UAB as the most recent university in the United States. In 1993, the impact of the UAB economy in the Birmingham area was estimated at more than $ 1.5 billion per year (that figure would be $ 2 billion per year in 1998). Since 1994, UAB is the first and only University of Alabama to achieve "Research University I" status in the Carnegie Foundation classification.

Athletics

The UAB athletic team is known as Blazers . The athletic colors of the school are green forests and old gold. School is one of 14 members of the USA Conference and participates in Division I of the NCAA. The men's basketball team, coached by Robert Ehsan, plays in the 8.58-seat Bartow Arena.

The school started its interlinked athletic program in 1978. The program was unveiled with a men's basketball by Gene Bartow, who was John Stone's successor at UCLA. Bartow left UCLA after several incredible seasons (52-9 for three seasons, including berths in the Final Four in 1976) to head up the formation of the first UAB male basketball team. He served as the first principal coach and athletic director for 18 years. Bartow led UAB to NIT in the second year of the program, followed by seven NCAA live Tournament performances, including a trip to Sweet 16 in 1981 and Elite Eight in 1982. Bartow retired from training in 1996 and, in 1997, UAB changed the name her basketball venue from UAB Arena to the Bartow Arena in her honor. In 30 years, UAB has made 13 NCAA appearances, three Sweet Sixteen appearances and Elite Eight appearances, and has had 27 seasons of victory, 19 of which are 20 win seasons.

In addition to basketball, UAB has programs in men's sports for baseball, golf, soccer, and tennis. Women's sports programs include softball, basketball, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field (indoor and outdoor), cross country, rifle and volleyball. On November 11, 2010, UAB announced the addition of sand and bowling volley starting with the 2011-2012 academic year.

Professional golfer Graeme McDowell (winner of the 2010 US Open) played on the UAB golf team from 1998 to 2002.

In December 2014, the university announces that three sports are being eliminated at the end of the academic year 2014-2015: football, bowling and rifle. This is the result of an external review commissioned by the university citing the rapidly changing NCAA landscape and rising operating costs. The football program became a bowl-eligible for the first time in a decade after winning against Southern Miss just two days before the announcement. On June 1, 2015, Watts announced a reversal of the decision to end UAB football because of huge public opinion against public funding decisions and raising more than $ 27 million towards the program. The Blazers football program will start re-playing in early 2016, and that rifles and bowling will also be restored. On June 4, 2015, Athletic Director Mark Ingram indicated that the 2017 season is a more sensible time to get the football team to play.
