Histori

Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow were founded in 1983 by Sister Mary Franciscus, RSM, to provide job training to Sunset Garden youth at risk. OBT started in a shanty store with the support of a small government contract. In 1992, additional public and private support allowed organizations to move to larger buildings around the same. At the moment, OBT launches adult job training programs and initiates support programs for graduates. Finally, remedial programs day and night are also added. In 2001, the organization expanded its youth program by opening a second location, OBT North, in the Bushwick/Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. In 2002, OBT won the PEPnet Builder award "for their commitment to continuous improvement" in working with young people. In 2006, after graduation of Sr. Mary, OBT hired Randolph Peers, former Vice President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, as the new Chief Executive Officer. In 2013 Opportunities for Better Tomorrow partner with YMCA from Greater New York to open Y Roads centers throughout New York City. The first Y Road Center opened in Jamaica, Queens in 2013 to provide youth disconnects in the Jamaican community with education, vocational training, and support services. A second Y Road center opens in Mott Haven, Bronx in October 2014. In July 2015, the Opportunity for Better Tomorrow intends to formally join the Ford Center of Maura Clarke-Ita (MCIF), which has operated from the Manpower Resource Bushwick OBT Center (BWRC) since September 2014.

Services

Youth and Work Training

The OBT service model is unique among youth programs because of its comprehensive training scope and its emphasis on personal discipline. The youth training model is a 20-week intensive course that includes middle school equivalence classes (if required), business mathematics, business English, office procedures, computer classes (MS Office), public speaking and communications, and module workplace. Simulated real work environment is an integral part of the entire curriculum. Participants are required to hit in and out during the hours of the day each day, dressed professionally, and given a work assignment with a schedule for completion. Excessive fatigue and absenteeism resulted in participants being "dismissed" from the program. Students who successfully complete the 20-weeks come up with a diploma of high school equality and the skills necessary to obtain and retain employment. Most OBT employment placements are administrative and administrative office positions in financial services firms, law firms, governments, and other related businesses. The average percentage of overall OBT employment placement is about 72% per annum. One fifth of OBT graduates also continue to enroll in college. Youth Education and Job Training Programs are available at OBT sites in Sunset Park and Williamsburg/Bushwick in Brooklyn; Jamaica, Queens; and Mott Haven, the Bronx

Young Adult Adult Program

The Adult Young Adult Apprentice program is a 14-week apprenticeship and apprenticeship available to young adults, aged 17-24, living in New York City with preferences given to those living in the Williamsburg, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, and Bushwick in Brooklyn and in Jamaica, Queens. The interns participated in intensive business skills training for five weeks followed by an 11-week paid internship. The OBT internship site includes: Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, New York State and New York City government offices, Weeksville Heritage Center, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Vernon Avenue Children's School, and Woodhull Medical Center.

Medical Administrative Assistant

The Medical Administration Assistant Training Program provides youth, ages 17-21, with experience and training to have a successful career in the medical field. Participants receive training in medical terminology, communication, customer service and basic bookkeeping. Participants also receive Medical Administrative Assistant Certification through the National Healthcareer Association and internships in hospital or doctor's office.

Saving Achievements in the Mexican Community

In 2013, the OBT initiated an initiative that specifically targeted youth in the Mexican community in Bushwick, Brooklyn to help improve retention in secondary schools and help Mexican youth continue to college. In collaboration with Churches United for Fair Housing, and Urban Planning Academy (AUP). OBT is running Growing Responsibility through the Ownership and Willance (GROW) program at St. Joseph Patron, and an Up Anchor program at the AUP. Each program meets once a week, in an effort to enhance personal and professional development in participants through career and college exploration and recreational activities including soccer, music, and art (at GROW).

Leading to Success

In 2014, as part of the Cure Violence initiative by the Mayor's Office of New York City and Councilman Jumaane Williams, who is Co-Chair of the New York City Council Task Force to Fight Pistol Violence, Opportunities for Better Tomorrow launch their Lead to the Program Successes with other community groups include Gangstas Making Changes to Astronomical Communities (GMACC), Sesame Leaflets, and East Flatbush Village and leaders in the East Flatbush neighborhood in Brooklyn. This program is an evidence-based public health approach that identifies and engages individuals most likely to engage in firearms violence and disseminates interventions aimed at controlling such behavior before it occurs, including the firing of revenge. The initiative combines six municipal bodies and organizations to work with violent interruptions and mediators and renders around community-based prevention services. A full month program for community members, ages 16-21, provides job skills training, resume assistance, and job placement assistance or access to college assistance. OBT will also provide services for community members up to age 30, which will include job placement assistance.
