Musical career

Early production (1989-1992)

At the end of 1993, Big Syke, member of the 2Pac group, Thug Life introduced Johnny to 'Pac. They quickly melted, recorded "Pour Out a Little Liquor", for the Above the Rim soundtrack, and "Death Around the Corner," which will appear in Me Against the World. The partnership slipped, though, when Tupac was sent to prison in February 1995. After being released in October, the couple reunited at Can-Am Studios in L.A.. Tupac felt very safe with him in the studio. 2Pac and Johnny J recorded over a hundred songs together - 11 of them, including "How Do U Want It" and "All About U", ending at All Eyez on Me ; the rest consists of most of the posthumous 2Pac work. Throughout the career of producer Johnny J, he has sold over 100 million albums.

He produced his 1989 EPier EP class Hip Hop Addict and his 1990 single "Knockin 'Boots" for the album of his friends, Candyman. Is not No Shame in My Game , which became platinum thanks to this single. He also produced the early work of recording artist Shady Montage who eventually became a Shade Sheist.

After many nominations for Candyman, Johnny J met 2Pac and recorded nine songs with him in three days. After this recording Johnny produced "Pour Out a Little Liquor" which appeared on the soundtrack of Above The Rim and 2Pac's album Thug Life . Soundtrack eventually won Double Platinum and won the Soundtrack of The Year Award at the 1995 Source Awards.

Johnny produced the song "Death Around The Corner" which ended in 3Pac's third solo album titled Me Against The World. The album finally reached the top of the Billboard 200.

Johnny J recorded and released his debut rap album I Gotta Be Me in 1994, which spawned two singles: "Get Away From Me" and "Dig Um 'Out". The music video was taken for "Get Away From Me". Jackson produced the entire album, and even showed off his singing skills on tracks such as "Love's the Way". The tap to "Better Off" will be recycled for 2Pac's "Picture Me Rollin '" on his 1996 album All Eyez On Me. I Gotta Be Me is now out of print and hard to find.

After the release of 2Pac in late 1995, the two began collaborating for the debut of 2Pac Death Row Records All Eyez On Me . The double album is released early next year, and Johnny J produces chart topping hits "All Bout U", "How Do U Want It" and "Life Goes On". He also produced "Thug Passion", "Shorty Wanna Be A Thug", "Wonda Why They Call U Bitch", "Run tha Streetz", "All Eyez on Me", "What'z Ya Phone #" and "Picture Me Rollin '"

The album is one of the most influential albums in hip hop history, and according to the RIAA, nine million copies of the album were sold in the United States alone on June 18, 1998.

According to 2pacworld.com, Johnny J. "co-authored and helped produce 11 songs on All Eyez on Me and never paid $ 100,000 advance or 3% per song royalty that he should have received." This financial dispute has led some to believe that Death Row was somehow responsible for his death; preferring to get him killed rather than paying royalties that would amount to millions due to the commercial success of the 2pac album he helped produce.

Various efforts (1997-2005)

Before the death of Tupac Shakur, Johnny produced more than 150 songs for rapper, many of them have never been released. Many of Johnny's collaborations with Shakur end with remixes for posthumous releases such as "Until The End of Time", "Better Dayz", and "RU Still Down" (Remember Me) ", while only a few are selected to remain in the original form.

Johnny has composed some music scores in movies like Gridlock'd . The first artist Johnny collaborated with after 2Pac's death was Bizzy Bone from Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. Johnny produced "Thugz Cry" and "Nobody Can Stop Me" from the album Heavenz Movie, a release released by Platinum. In 2009 Klock Work Entertainment confirmed that Johnny produced the entire album for Bizzy, but never released.

Along with Napoleon of Outlawz and Val Young, Johnny released "Never Forget" in 2004, a tribute to 2Pac. The music video was taken for the song, and included many guest appearances from many close friends of Shakur.

Last year (2006-2008)

In mid-2006, Johnny J was the prime minister's 10 year anniversary tribute track of Tupac on a compilation of charity by Mutulu Shakur entitled A 2Pac Tribute: Dare 2 Struggle . The song was written by a new artist who worked with Klock Work at the time named T-Jay.

In mid-2008, Iranian-Canadian rappers Imaan Faith collaborated with Deejay Ra to release Imaan's Let The Truth Be Known album on Universal Music Canada, featuring an opening song with Johnny J titled "Goin 2 Da Top" which was recorded in Johnny's studio in California in mid-2006. Johnny's name was mentioned in billboard, radio and TV ads in Canada as one of the album's producers during a 3-month ad campaign, and the album was mapped out at # 6 in the top ten of Nielsen SoundScan in Canada on its 11th week of release.

Johnny J has been recording for most of 2008 with actress/singer Tatyana Ali in her sophomore music album The Light .
